After winning a record eight Olympic gold medals in Beijing, American swimming superstar Michael Phelps signs on with sugar-loaded cereal.

You better eat your . . . Frosted Flakes?

Olympic legend Michael Phelps will appear on boxes of the Kellogg's brand sugar cereal, drawing sharp criticism from health experts worried about the message he'll be sending to children across America.

"I would not consider Frosted Flakes the food of an Olympian," said nutritionist Rebecca Solomon of Mount Sinai Medical Center.

7. US speedskater Bonnie Blair has been known to load up on candy before races
Five gold medals and one bronze medal. All with pre-race candy. The trick was in learning which candy gave her the optimum carbo load and energy burst she needed. As for the calories, she simply burned them off on the track.

Still, I am somewhat bemused that Kellogg beat General Mills to the punch over Phelps.

Of course, that shit will catch up with his system one day, but have fun now, Michael!

19. Well, he's burning those calories now.
But when he stops swimming for a living, he's going to have to radically change his diet. And I doubt it's all Frosted Flakes.

Then again, who knows?? Michael may be a great athlete but ..... how to put this charitably...... I don't think he has a future in acting or sportscasting like some ex jocks do when their sports career ends.

Seems to have worked for him, as he probably downed a couple of boxes with the amount of food he eats to swim.

People have known who Phelps was since at least the 2004 Olympics. Why do you think there was so much anticipation over him this year?

24. My eight year old worships Phelps, due to this Olympic performance.
He's going to join a swim team as a result. I don't think a flash in the pan would have caused that kind of reaction.

After all it's just someone running really fast instead of someone swimming really fast.

32. Definition of sport
1. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

Seems very much to meet that definition.

23. Would Granola have been a better choice?
Nutrition facts for Frosted Flakes per serving:

110 calories, 27g carbs, 12 g sugar

Nutrition facts for Nature Valley Low Fat Granola per serving:

212 calories, 44g carbs, 18 grams sugar

Admittedly, a cereal like Cheerios would be better:

110 calories, 22g carbs, 3 g sugar

But the reality is that many kids will dump sugar on it to make it palatable. My mom was very concerned about sugar intake, and only bought us Cheerios or similar low-sugar cereals growing up. We dumped tons of sugar into our cereal bowls when she wasn't looking-- enough to turn the leftover milk into sugar sludge. There are 4.75 grams of sugar in a level teaspoon. I estimate we added about 4 teaspoons (at least) per bowl. That's 19 grams.

Would Apple Cinnamon Cheerios have been a better choice? I think so:

120 calories, 25g carbs, 13 g sugar

Note the amount of sugar is about the same as Frosted Flakes.

27. Hmm as a diabetic I NOW it is not that simple
that said... cheerios has a very high glycemic index, actually higher (I know shocking) than frosted flakes

That is why I don't buy cheerios no more...

34. Yes, glycemic index really puts a twist into things.
To realize that white rice, potatoes and bread can have a higher glycemic index than plain sugar is mind-blowing. My all-time favorite misleading advertised food is nutri-grain bars, though. A nutrigrain bar has all of 1 (!!!!) gram of fiber per bar, 2 grams of fat, 9 grams of sugar and a glycemic index of 66. Not horribly unhealthy, but I wouldn't call it particularly healthy, either-- it's right on the edge of "high GI foods." A chocolate pop tart has the same amount of fiber, 3 grams of fat, 13 grams of sugar, and a glycemic index of 70. But no one would ever call a pop tart a healthy breakfast choice!

36. Frosted Flakes?
That's funny! It's not health inducing, but he DOES eat 12,000 calories a day, so a couple of bowls of that junk cereal are a good start.

The sad thing is that there are probably some idiots out there who will believe that a cereal with FROSTED in the name will actually be healthy because an Olympian is their spokesperson.
