Faye is coming our way...
<snip>
Tropical storm Fay moves on Cuba, Florida on alert
3 hours ago

HAVANA (AFP) — Tropical storm Fay bore down on Cuba Sunday after leaving five dead and one missing in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, as Florida declared an emergency and ordered tourists to leave the popular southern Keys.

The Miami-based US National Hurricane Center warned Sunday that Fay, already packing winds of up to 85 kilometers (50 miles) an hour, could evolve into a hurricane in the coming hours and dump several inches of rain over Cuba, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands before lashing Florida on Monday.

It forecast Fay could soon be packing hurricane-strength winds of 120 kilometers (75 miles) an hour, and placed a hurricane warning on parts of Cuba, islands off the southern tip of Florida and halfway up Florida's west coast.

"Fay could be approaching hurricane strength when it reaches western Cuban tonight and when it approaches the Florida Keys Monday," the advisory said.

At 2100 GMT the storm's center was located 335 kilometers (205 miles) southeast of Havana and 435 kilometers (270 miles) southeast of Key West, Florida. It was moving west-northwest at 24 kilometers (15 miles) per hour.

2. The bad news re Fay is that
Edited on Sun Aug-17-08 07:01 PM by malaise
she's reorganizing and will leave Cuba closer to Havana. That means Fay has quite a bit of time to strengthen before she hits Central Florida. Fay is slowing down now 10mph. DUers, do not let your guard down re this system.

add.

19. It depends on how long she gets energy over water.
Most of the weather boards I've looked at they aren't impressed, but it is still a big ??? as to where it is going. Let's face it, it could go into the GOM, up the east coast of florida and across to the other side and back in, or up the west side. Too early to tell so all should be prepared.

I just don't want to see people panic and drain the shelves of food and act crazy.

3. Let's get FEMA down there right away! That ought to take care of the Castro regime once and for all!

Now, this is how we go in, Mr. President. First we land our formaldehyde trailors at the Bay of Pigs . . .

6. when people say it's nothing to worry about, I check their locale
You're in Miami and you know how fast a "nothing" storm can grow to spank a state.
I'm in Jax and am not looking forward to the torrential downpours and probable power outages.
I am an "emergency prep" geek, having been through a few nasty situations in the past. We're ready with nothing to do but hold out and drink the beer before it gets warm

11. I do indeed...
Been in Miami for almost 15 years, and on the Florida/Georgia coast all my life. RIdden out many a storm so far, and this one's not gonna be an Andrew, or even a Wilma. Some rough weather, but hopefully nothing devastating.

I hope I'm not implying that I'm not worried - I take every storm seriously - but this one looks like it shouldn't be too bad.

Good luck to the Left Coasters, it looks like you're liable to get the worst of it. Stay safe!

20. I did back in college...
They'd lock-down the entire dorm when a storm was approaching, so a few of us would go collect money ahead of time and buy several hundred dollars' worth of alcohol for everyone. Huge floor party for as long as it lasted. Good times...

He's too absorbed with the U.S. women's volleyball team.

15. Last year I listened to Jamaican radio on line while a hurricane was
blowing through. I've been there so I know there's not a lot of protection for people living there. That is very upsetting to hear about those two people.

16. Over Cuba? like Gitmo?
Aren't the prisoners in "cages" outside? It is sad to think of being in a situation where you can't get to safety but have to rely on another to provide it...and will the US military be 'kind' enough to think of their safety?

I have never seen or witnessed such weather, my thoughts and prayers are with you all...
I can only imagine what such sustained winds can do. We get "gusts over the ridges" during winter snowstorms of 75mph, but that's as much as I have ever seen...
Stay safe everyone, and keep us posted how this unfolds...

18. I for one hope that Georgia stays within the "cone". A slow
moving tropical storm would be just the ticket to finish helping Lake Lanier and the entire southeast although we've gotten a lot more rain this year.

though we had a few nasty squalls earlier.

Floridians north of us should be keeping an eye out for sure.
