Police: Ga. man held family capitve in squalor

Pretty goddamned sick, and "squalor" apparently doesn't begin to describe it. However, Lt. Missy Collins of the Lavonia, GA police department said something that's pretty fucking stupid:

Thurmond ruled the family with an iron fist. Sometimes, he'd fly into a rage and hit his children — ages 14, 13, 12 and 9 — with a steel-toed boot, Collins said. Other times, the children told Collins they would hear their father attacking and raping their mother in a bedroom.
"I asked, 'Did you go to help?' And they looked at me like it was the strangest question. Dad pretty much did whatever he wanted to do," Collins said.

These children have been imprisoned and abused for three years, and this idiot cop asks "Did you go to help?" What the fuck were they supposed to do? Hit themselves with the steel-toed boot to save him the trouble? As if they haven't gone through a bad enough ordeal, now they get to spend the rest of their lives blaming themselves for their mother's repeated rapes? Who let this flatfoot anywhere near these children? Hell, why didn't she go ahead and hit them with the steel-toed boot?

What the hell were they supposed to do? They were PRISONERS, never left alone, and they were KIDS.

When my Great Grandfather was Sheriff of Angelina County, Texas, he would take filth such as Thurmond out into the forest and come back to town.

Alone.

He had a pretty large impact on the level of criminal behavior in the County.

4. I can't condone capital punishment

Especially not when it involves summary executions, but it's hard to muster any sympathy at all for this Thurmond asshole.
