Indianapolis - For months it's been a well-kept secret. But now Warren Township Schools confirm a disturbing case of sex in the classroom. The illicit activity has parents concerned and a district at a loss for words.

Shop class gives students a chance to learn outside of the book. But at Warren Township's Raymond Park Middle School, two students engaged in illicit acts in view of goggled eyes.

13 Investigates was tipped off by a disturbed resident who writes:

"...during school hours in a classroom with an experienced teacher present, two sixth graders completed the act of intercourse...at least ten students were witnesses. No disciplinary actions were taken against the teacher... All teachers were told to keep quiet."

5. My initial reaction...
...was "Gee, why couldn't they have had shop classes like that when I was taking them?"

Then, of course, I remembered that, back then, shop classes were boys-only, while the girls all had to go learn how to be perfect homemakers in HomeEc. :-(

2. your post is misleading
From the article:

Associate Superintendent Jeff Swensson told Eyewitness News off camera the teacher didn't know what was going on because another student acted as a "look-out." But once the teacher discovered the behavior, immediate action was taken. Swensson says the students involved were recommended for expulsion. But he did not say whether the board followed that recommendation.

4. you editing implies that this was somehow encouraged or promoted by the teacher
that there is a coverup of the event entirely, and that the teacher deserves to be fired.

6. Yes, and the feedback on that web site...
...is very strongly in favor of firing the teacher, if not the entire administration, and/or pulling your kids out of public school and homeschooling them. :eyes:

I don't want to downplay the seriousness of the situation, but there's a lot of room here for knee-jerk reactions, rumor, and hearsay. Did the incident happen in a place where the teacher should have been able to notice what was going on (in other words, was he being lazy and unobservant, or was there a hidden corner or corridor in the shop where he couldn't have been expected to see it)? Other than that, it seems like the incident was handled in about the same way other kinds of major disciplinary infractions would have been, once they had been discovered. The only judgment call here appears to have been the administration's decision to handle such discipline quietly, with the students and their families being the only ones notified, rather than issuing an immediate press release and making it a public issue from day one. From the reactions on that web site, it appears that the latter course would have been what most of the public would have preferred...and a good reason, IMHO, why it wasn't chosen.
