Belafonte on Rice (AP/CNN)
Someone posted earlier quoting an interview with Harry Belafonte, who recently turned 80. I'm reposting so maybe more people will see it. The interview is an interesting read, especially if you didn't live through the times he talks about (strange that this is on the 'entertainment' page, it's more 'social history'): http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6420733.stm

The interview is mostly positive; he sounds much more like someone wanting to lead and to inspire rather than to just criticize. But what criticism he does offer can be scathing:
He dismisses the appointment of Condoleezza Rice and before her, Colin Powell, to positions of genuine power in George W Bush's administration.

He has described them as "house slaves", and doesn't feel their presence has helped his cause in any way.

"He puts them there in the service of power. They are quite powerless - powerless - powerless," he says.

"They are extensions of George W Bush, Condoleezza Rice is revered nowhere. She has influence over a nothingness."

Does she not make even one millimetre of difference, I asked. "She makes a difference for the worse," Belafonte replied.

not afraid to speak are heroes in our survival.

If only we had more leaders iike him and some who are already leading.

Rice - all that talent - wasted, except as a role model of what not to attain to.
