Irony Department: Members of Christian bike gang arrested in raids
Edited on Wed Aug-06-08 12:09 PM by Taverner
Members of Christian bike gang arrested in raids

(08-06) 08:46 PDT Anaheim, CA (AP) --

SWAT teams have raided several Orange and Riverside county homes to arrest members of a Christian motorcycle gang in connection with several stabbings.

Anaheim police Sgt. Tim Schmdit says eight members of the "Set Free Soldiers" gang were taken into custody early Wednesday for investigation of attempted murder.

No injuries were reported.

Police served 11 search warrants in Anaheim, Costa Mesa and Rancho Santa Margarita in Orange County and Norco in Riverside County.

Schmidt says the raids were prompted by a fight in a Newport Beach bar last week between members of the bike gang and the Hell's Angels. Three people were stabbed in that confrontation.

1. what's ironic is that
the christian gang was arrested after getting into a fight with hell's angels.

or maybe that's what you meant.

it's like The Prophecy.

was christopher walken involved?

2. Whats ironic to me is that a Christian group stabbed a few of them
No love the the Hells Angels, but I thought Christians were supposed to turn the other cheek?

Oh yeah, they worship the republican jesus...

4. that part i don't find ironic
they are a christian motorcycle gang. not a perfect people motorcycle gang.

not to mention that for all i know it was self-defense.

i mean they stabbed HELL'S ANGELS for pete's sake lol.

5. Do you need SWAT officers to arrest someone for self defense?

7. need?
the question isn't what you need

the question is what is the proper response to arrest multiple suspects for a violent felony.

iow, what's the proper balance in regards to show of force/manpower/firepower/etc. as related to perceived risk to suspects/cops/civilians at the scene.

clearly, the DA/Cops didn't think there was sufficient evidence at this point to believe it's self-defense or the cops wouldn't have gone and made the arrest.

i said it MAY be self-defense.

using swat is a good tactic for this type of arrest.

in my agency, we use a rather detailed threat matrix/;questionnaire to decide when to use swat for warrant and high risk arrests.

it's always a balancing test.

8. True true

9. yes
but not SWAT. but i've used them for my search warrants before, when there is sufficient factors on the threat matrix.

fwiw, i agree with balko at reason.com that swat *is* overused. but in an arrest for stabbings in a gang related fight, based on what i know of this case, that's totally reasonable.

10. Cool. My dad was a cop - SJPD for 25 years
Back then (the 70's) you only used SWAT if 3 patrol cars wasn't enough. And they used to double up the cars back then.

21. No telling
I'm sure I would have found them offensive, but I'll admit a lack of neutrality on the issue.

19. The Book of Harley, chapter 6, verses 5-18
And in those days Jesus and his bike club did ride unto Jerusalem. But they were met by Roman pigs at the gates. Jesus said unto them "Let us into the city, yea, for we have right to enter, or I'll kick your fucking ass." then the Romans held Jesus, but Jesus broke free and did smash a chair over one of their heads. Simon called Peter stabbed a Roman in the back. the gang then did flee the area.

May God grant us the wisdom to understand these words.

23. Wow, and I thought the Mormons where aggressive about converting folks.
I guess if a motorcycle gang showed up to "witness" to me, I might think twice before slamming the door in their faces.

26. So tonight, TBN and the other evangelical networks will say "Christian Bikers Are Persecuted"!
And they'll blame the whole thing on a ban on prayer in Sturgis.
