State-by-state list of Voter ID laws (map, too)
After what happened to Galoglas, it seems like a good idea for everyone to become familiar with their state's voter ID laws. Many of our polling places are casual about enforcing the laws on the books, so it's easy to become complacent and just assume you'll be able to vote without intimidation. Maybe it's best, then, to know exactly what poll workers can require of us, so we'll be prepared to fight any illegal challenges.

List of each state's laws

11. I didn't say that
but, perhaps there are two sides to the story and we should hear from the poll workers as well?

3. that's part of my point
It's like a traffic stop. Most of the time there's no trouble, but everyone should know the law so we can protect our rights if necessary.

It's lame that voting has become like a traffic stop, but here we are.

12. Has it become like a traffic stop?
Or are there two sides to the story? Have we heard from the poll workers as to what they said or did or what they believe their instructions were? Could there be more than meets the eye?

14. There may be more than meets the eye.
Is it important that the story out of Missouri be absolutely unassailable for my point to stand?

All I'm saying is that voters are better off knowing their rights.

16. I absolutely agree with you
that we are all better off knowing our rights and methods of recourse. Yet, the words of someone whom I consider to be a very wise man come to mind.... "Most wounds in life are self-inflicted".

10. No
In fact I did not use a photo ID, but I did use the card provided by the St. Louis County Election Board (which does not include a photo btw) as I have done countless times before and never had a problem.

8. These photo ID requirements tic me off.
We recently moved to a new address in the same city, our daughter and son-in-laws home, so we're not technically homeless, due to extended bouts of IT unemployment (spouse) and underemployment (self), having already chased from two Forbes-decreed dying Ohio cities, Cleveland and Dayton; changed our voter registration address and we received cards last week; now we need to get brand new DLs at a dear price, around $50, just to be able to vote w/o a hassle at a different table in the same room. We have no utility bills, etc...Ohio government uses debit card (no photo) for benefits...which will run out if nothing happens long before Nov.

13. I'll be moving to Ohio soon
So I was interested in reading the voter ID requirements for Ohio in the PDF I linked to.

"A current and valid photo identification; A military identification that shows the voter’s name and current address; A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows the voter’s name and current address."

It's not a stretch to imagine some slightly power-hungry Ohio poll worker demanding to see a photo ID. But state law says that any government document with your name and current address will do; no photo ID is required.

9. In my state, NY, first time registered voters need ID. All I have to do is bring in myself, sign my
name and vote.

17. That's also the Missouri requirement for first time voters. In this case, Galloglas
has been voting at the same precinct for 7 years. The Voter ID law the repukes passed in '06 was ruled unconstitutional by the Missouri Supreme Court. They are just hoping to slip it in anyway; don't know if it is maliciously intentional (as in telling precinct workers to require picture id) or 'accidentally' intentional (as in failing to properly train precinct workers).

19. I don't know if it's a county or state thing...
Here in Stanislaus County California, I've always been asked for both my name and my street address when going to vote. If the name and address I give do not match what is on the registration form, I will only be permitted to cast a provisional ballot UNLESS I'm willing to show them my ID.
