Olbermann speaks: why Dana Milbank won't be on Countdown any more
Edited on Mon Aug-04-08 05:19 PM by mloutre

Per KO's diary on Daily Kos this evening:

Dana Milbank And Unhappy Endings

Best Timing:

Dana Milbank of The Washington Post, who notified us today that after four years appearing with us, he had accepted another television offer.

This saved your crack Countdown staff an increasingly difficult decision.

For nearly a week we'd been waiting for him to offer a correction or an explanation for his column from last week in which he apparently reported an Obama quote without a full context turned the meaning of the quote inside-out.

Then he called criticisms of his column "whines" even though the dispute was over whether Obama said the self-deprecating: "It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign -- that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. It's about America. I have just become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions" -- or only the part about "I have just become a symbol..."

We had decided not to have Dana on this news-hour again until this was cleared up, and, sadly after some very happy years, he's apparently chosen to make that cloud permanent.

Good luck, Dana.

More background from KO at the link, not to mention a full comment thread in response, but that's the gist of it, y'all...

1. So Dana will be on Fox from this point on?
Good, because that will mean that I won't have to see him or his glasses
and smirky smile.

18. Update: priceless call & response from KO in the dKos comments thread just now:
Commenter posts:

Dan Rather is forced out

Dana Milbank takes a bigger and better offer. Milbanks narrative lives on, Rather's truth is buried. Thus is the tale of how poor sourcing works in American politics."

And then Keith Olbermann replies:

Who said "bigger and better"?

All I said was "another" tv offer.

I'll leave it for him to announce it, but if it's what I'm told it is, it ain't better.

I remember seeing Milbank one time with Bill Maher on HBO and every other word out of his mouth was f***. It was pointless -- it was like he was so happy he could throw around four letter words. Even Maher was giving him a look like "what's up with you". I never could stand Milbank -- but put up with him when he was on KO. Great -- now I don't have to see his smarmy face anymore. :woohoo:

53. Bout time. Milbank is a corporate tool. He lied about Bush and Enron.
Edited on Tue Aug-05-08 02:40 AM by McCamy Taylor
In late 2001-early 2002 he wrote that the Bush administration had never lobbied the Senate the pass the House bill to give Enron a big infusion of cash before its bankruptcy became public knowledge. None of the House Republicans have ever explained why they wrote the bill---which they called a 9/11 economic stimulus package. But the WH sent its people to the Senate to lobby for it. The records were on the internet and I linked and copied them in the Enron folder over at Salon in the Politics section at Table Talk. Later, the link was scrubbed, and Dana Milbank told a lie for the WH in the WaPo when the administration was up to its neck in the Enron scandal and when evidence that it knew about the Enron bankruptcy and was trying to bail them out would have been deadly. I wrote the Ombudsman at the WaPo, but they never did squat about it.

Those who have watched Milbank on Countdown will have noticed that he has always managed to steer the conversation away from anything that the GOP does not really want to talk about using what passes for humor. He is a Tool with a capital T who has been using KO, and it is good riddance to bad rubbish.

62. Why Progressives DO NOT win elections!!!
I have observed this site for almost 3 years now and this is my very first post and I registered today just to say this: STOP THE BLOODY BACK AND FORTH, PEOPLE!
You have a nominee, support him and stop revisiting old issues! As much as the Repulicans do not like their nominee, they are now fully behind him. Think about this for a moment - Rush, Hannity, ANN, Ingram and every known and unknown rightwinger out there who declared they would NEVER support John, is now out there beating the bush for him.

Why can't Progressives do the same? I'll tell you why? Because you all think you are too SMART, that's why! But SMART don't win elections, support does!

So, get off you SMART horses and support your guy and anyone who is trying to do the same for your guy! That is how elections are won!

Otherwise, look in the mirror the day after the election is lost and don't blame the nominee or the Republicans for stealing another election. Look in the mirror and remind yourselves your SMART asses lost you the election - again!

Have a good day.

Edited on Tue Aug-05-08 11:17 AM by TahitiNut
Mostly they were smears of KO and snark aimed at Obama ... with a decidedly primary-like tone.

The fact of the matter is that Milbank DID facilitate a right-wing SMEAR of Obama by misleadingly reporting his comments out of context. It's an absolutely CLASSIC right-wing campaign tactic - get a reporter to contort a quote and then it's off to the races. (Al Gore invented the Internet, remember?)

IMHO, any defense of Milbank's act is misplaced at best and enabling right-wingers at worst.

69. No problem. ProfessorGAC is, by far, one of the more rational and reasonable DUers. ....
... and one of my very favorites. (And that's not just because we agree 99% of the time. Really.) :dunce:

In a sense, I can understand how one might regard the divisive posts in THIS particular thread as nothing worth mentioning ... since we've seen far worse in recent months. Happily, the moderators are on top of things. So, he and I might tend to "keep our powder dry" on threads like this one given the more extreme stuff we see.

70. Thank you. I totally missed the significance of this.
I watched the show, and it went right over my head. This is why I need this forum. And I'm sure it's not just me.

74. Yes, I was outraged at Milbank's actions and am very happy to see Keith stick to
his principles and not pretend to make nice.

Go, Keifie!

The day I left Vietnam and the day Milbank was born. It's the yin and the yang in action.
Better he's outed now rather than later.

81. Learned my lesson on the Skull and Bones thing. I never liked
Dana Milbank because of his snide attitude, which Keith used to appear to encourage. I have to admit not knowing what he said about Obama. I'll have to research that and find out. But, the Skull and Bones thing won't fly too well because John Kerry who practically hand picked Obama is also Skull and Bones. It's hard to get away from those guys when you get in the super big leagues politically.

I'm all for Obama now, just saying putting the S&B thing on Milbank doesn't tell you who he might be for or against. I do tend to think the MSM might be going against Obama now. Wouldn't surprise me at all. I hear that a lot of reporters were upset with Obama's lack of attention to them when he went to the Middle East. I applaud him for what he did, but he might learn the hard way that you can't make the press the slightest bit angry with you. Maybe Dana was following Andrea Mitchell's lead. She was supposedly livid on Obama's lack of "deference" to the "superstar" reporters who followed him over there.

I don't watch Keith anymore. Nothing against him. I just took a talking heads break. :) I'll be back.

83. I, too, have heard
various undertones to some of the things he has said. And that smirk, it seems that's a republic qualification that they all must master before being accepted into the coven. A "you don't know what I do" kind of smirk, they ALL have it. My wife calls it a "republican laugh".
