Horse dragged more than 200 feet behind four-wheeler

JEFFERSON CITY | Veterinarians in eastern Missouri this afternoon are caring for a horse that was allegedly dragged behind a four-wheeler earlier this week.

The Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Mo., is caring for the horse, which Humane Society volunteers have named Mason.

Officials say Mason, a 2-year-old male bay Missouri Fox Trotter, was dragged more than 200 feet on his side. Mason’s owner was attempting to bring the horse back to a pen after he had escaped Tuesday evening, said Debbie Hill, vice president of operations at the ranch.

The owner was arrested that night and has since been charged with felony animal abuse.

Mason suffered injuries up and down the side of his body that was dragged over gravel and concrete, said Amanda Hirshberg, assistant director of the ranch. Two of the injuries go all the way to the bone, and Hirshberg said veterinarians were still finding new pieces of gravel in the wounds.

The horse is expected to survive, Hirshberg said; infection now is the primary concern.

A court hearing is scheduled for next week to determine custody of the horse, Hill said. Humane Society officials hope to keep the horse at the ranch, where they can continue to treat the wounds and add weight to the horse, which is also malnourished.

Officials with the Iron County prosecutor’s and sheriff’s offices were not available for comment this afternoon.

1. I hope the sonofabitch who dragged him gets lots of time to think about what a fuckwad he was in a
4x6 box.

2. Hmm, sounds like we should drag the horse's owner around for awhile.
I hate people who are cruel to any animal. No wonder the horse had run away, and didn't want to come back. He knew what a cruel, evil asshole this guy was.

3. There are lots of people out there who should not be allowed around
animals, children and old people. It's too bad there isn't a way to mark them and make them keep separate. They should just all be kept together so they can be awful to others just like themselves.

8. Yeah, unfortunately, I agree with you.
People are the cruelest entities I've ever come across. And then there are the wonderful people who advocate for animal and human rights, like many of the people who are drawn to DU. I wish I hadn't clicked on this thread, but I had to know if the horse survived. IMO, if you do this kind of thing to an animal, or to anyone, you've just forfieted your right to life on this planet. Good thing I'm not 'god', eh?

6. What Has Happened to People?
Anyone that will do this to an innocent creature scares the hell out of me. So it escaped? Doesn't that responsibility lay on the owner and not the animal? This is happening more and more to animals and there is no excuse.

10. well, it sounds like the owner of the horse should be malnourished and drug around by a 4 wheeler
that poor animal, that owner should be punished big time for this.

11. Thanks for ruining my day. Now I have this image of this poor animal and
the visceral hatred for the a-hole who did it. My blood pressure has skyrocketed and there's not a damn thing I can do about it.

I don't really understand why people post these type things - not just here but they pop up everywhere.

We know people are monsters and terrible sh*ts but if there isn't something that we can DO to affect the situation like a phone number of someone or other or a petition or something - what is the sense in posting something so awful?

15. Same attitude of most Americans toward their government.
"I don't want to think about it." "It's too big for me to affect." "What can I do about it?" What's the sense in posting anything awful? or for that matter anything at all?

13. I could not read it
but I have seen some pretty awful things on the cutting horse circuit. Not often but it happens and I never have been able to understand it. My horses remember forever the way you treat them and they reward you appropriately. I hope (since I could not bring myself to read this) that they took the horse and any other animals this person had away from him/her.
