Teen in Gun Raid Had Teacher List
Parents had no idea that son had in bedroom 181 rounds of ammunition, assault rifles, 50 pounds of explosive chemicals, 2 shotguns, handgun, metal pipes, detonation wires.
The Bethesda teenager in whose home investigators found a cache of assault rifles and bombmaking materials was compiling a list of home addresses for teachers at his former high school, police said yesterday.

Police officials said it was unclear why Colin McKenzie-Gude, 18, was making the list of teachers from St. John's College High School, a private school in Northwest Washington from which he graduated this year.

Also yesterday, police said McKenzie-Gude's father, Joseph L. Gude, 62, was charged with buying guns for his son, including at least some guns that the teenager was too young to own legally. Authorities have not said what, if anything, they think McKenzie-Gude planned to do with the weapons.

McKenzie-Gude turned himself in yesterday afternoon at a Montgomery police station in Rockville. He was charged in a warrant with five counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a minor, possession of a destructive device and possession of explosive material, police said.

for decades in the US and the incidents of criminal activity with guns by same kids was practically non-existent.

Maybe you may want this whacko living next door to you. Maybe you didn't read the post clearly.

Minor. Illegal possession. Explosive material.

11. correct
and that doesn't disprove my statement, which was in response to an erroneous statement.

I arrested a 16 yr old with a glock recently. Doesn't disprove that kids can grow up in households with a healthy respect for guns.

Perhaps his over fondness for them should have been observed earlier.

I don't know.

But easy access and his oddly over stimulated interest led to him breaking several laws.

15. Speculate as you will about "over stimulated interest," but you were different?...
So the presence of guns was not the problem? I would suggest that proper training with guns by a competent parent/adult is far better than "discovering" a cache of weaponry later on. There is no guarantee that some kind of crime won't take place, but it's far better than treating guns like most adolescents treats cigarettes, booze, sex: something "new" because few parents/adults took the time to make it "old."

BTW, you noticed I didn't receive an answer immediately above. I guess that is because the fellow was check-mated; re-read and you'll see.

Doesn't get much more controlled than that. The permits and licenses for explosives are unobtainable for a teenager.

3. He was 18 & living at home...
maybe his parents either respected his privacy & space and didn't go in his room, or he did all his own laundry & stuff and the parents had no *reason* to go in his room...

Do *you* have kids? If so, do know exactly what all they have in *their* rooms? I'm a single father of 15 & 16 year olds... I don't know everything that's in their rooms, either, but then again, I don't snoop through their stuff... unless I have a good reason to do so.

With the majority of kids carrying backpacks today, do you *ever* really know what they're bringing in the house?

My mother would search my stuff all the damn time, and would consistently lie about it, which pissed me off because my neat stuff would continuously go missing, like my awesome Glock field knife that I got for about $30 bucks, I'm sure that sucker would still be proudly serving me today, indestructible and ready to go on any camping trip I could imagine, but it "disappeared" and she didn't even have the decency to hold onto it and return it to me later in life.

17. "181 rounds" is a pathetically small amount
of ammunition, seriously, that is less than seventy dollars of plinking 9mm ammunition, and about six to eight dollars worth of plinking .22 ammunition. But it sounds like a big number, so that's what they are reporting, because if they list the amount, it must be an issue right? Or an unreasonable amount.

181 rounds is less than one hours worth of shooting. I wish they'd report it in a less slanted way.

if i totalled all the ammo in my house i think it would be somewhere between 2000-2500 rounds

and its all stored in a safe that is no bigger then a small box

21. The mainstream media has little knowledge or interest..
in the gun culture.

Since they view handguns as only useful as killing weapons they probably consider any amount of ammo over 20 rounds excessive.

For those unfamiliar with regular shooters, many buy ammo in bulk or on sale. Since many shooters have multiple weapons it's not uncommon for them to have thousands of rounds in their house. An average trip to the range for me will consume between 200 to 300 rounds of usually two different calibers. Many shooters will fire fire more than that in a single day.

....for not having an adequate supply of bullets to do the job right. Are you under some impression that you come off looking good in doing this?

Reminds me of the D.C. sniper threads, where gunnies made lip-smacking comments about how many more people would have been taken out if the shooters had used a Really Cool Gun.....

34. Not at all
But 181 rounds is 181 rounds more than is neccessary to kill a human, but for recreational purposes, 181 rounds is nothing. 181 rounds is a disappointingly short afternoon at the range, but if the person is planning on murdering people, 181 rounds is likely far more than he would actually fire, so it is sort of irrelevant how many rounds he had. Unless he was supplying a terrorist group with arms, the amount of ammunition is really pretty meaningless. But the report made it out to be an unnaturally high number of rounds for one person to have, by the way they phrased uit. It really isn't, and is in fact a pathetically small amount.

35. I'm pointing out that the supply of ammunition was hardly remarkable
Considering that pistol ammunition is typically sold in 50-round boxes or 250-round bricks, shotgun ammuniton is usually sold in 25-round boxes, and that .22 rimfire ammunition is usually sold in 500-round bricks.

And if he had a variety of calibers to feed, he might well have only a few dozen rounds for each gun, maybe even less.

37. Sure,
If he had a "captive audience" and wasn't stopped first, but 181 rounds at the range over the course of an hour is totally normal, disappointing because of how short you can be out there, but 181 rounds while going on a murderous rampage is totally different. No way he could get that far, unless the police force was totally inept AND no one else around was equipped to stop him.

Concealed carry makes sense, cops can be quite a ways away. I'm glad this little sociopath got picked up, I almost think they should have caught him sooner.
