GOP congressman hints at support for sending Rove to jail.»

Yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee voted to hold Karl Rove in contempt of Congress. On MSNBC yesterday, Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC), breaking with his party, said he believes Rove should be forced to testify. “Let him explain his involvement, if any, in this Don Siegelman case.” When pressed on whether he was suggesting sending Rove to jail, Jones signaled that he supports this option:

Q: Knowing that he’s not coming, should Congress use its inherent contempt power and haul him in, possibly put him into jail?

JONES: Whatever authority Congress has, we need to uphold the institution.

Q: So it sounds like you’re saying that you too think that that should be a real option here.

JONES: I think that we should uphold the institution and the integrity of the House of Representatives.

5. Less that than power.
When Jefferson has his office searched, repubs were adamant that (a) it was wrong and (b) any evidence from the search be thrown out.

Not because they liked Jefferson, not because they thought he was innocent, but because anything that diminishes any part of Congress's power and privileges diminishes their own.

I personally believe a large portion of SCOTUS' habeas reasoning boils down to the same principle, as do many of *'s actions. But it's hard to separate out principle and process from the details of the case at hand.

3. Jones is also against the Iraq war - He had a change of heart after the war began
And he has stuck with it.

4. Yep. I remember that. Sadly, he's probably one of the only rethugs
who might have a conscience and respect for the House.

14. If we get the flood, it will only be because it's an election year.
So damn sad.

Personally, I'd have thought the Republics'd be shitting themselves at the thought of an Obama administration using any fraction of the powers 43* has amassed in the executive.

What am I missing here?

13. I can believe that. At one point Rove/Bush was threatening to bankroll opponents if they didn't
give 110% support to the administration.

16. This Walter Jones has Been Decent and Honest Before
This is not the first time that this Walter Jones has acted like an honest human being, and not like a Republican. I remember a couple of years ago, before Democrats regained the Congress, Sen. Byron Dorgan (a great one) held an "informational meeting" or whatever you call it when it isn't an actual hearing because you aren't the Party in power. It was great, on the Iraq war and lies leading to it, etc., with great panels, bombshell testimony of the type we all now know, and this Walter Jones asked to be allowed to sit with the Democratic group holding the meeting, asked questions, and appeared very distressed and angry even then. One of the very few decent Republicans.
