Arkansas Yanks ("Racist") NGR License Plates

ARKANSAS -- A series of hundreds of Arkansas-issued license plates are being pulled out of circulation over letter combinations that some claim are racist.

"I couldn't imagine putting this on my car," motorist Alice Kunce said as she held up her "018-NGR" license plate.

Kunce said she found the letter combination offensive.

"She looked at it and said, 'Why not,'" Kunce said. "I said, 'Look at it, what does it say?' and she looked at it and said, 'Oh.'"

The state decided to pull the entire series of plates after being made aware of the letter combination.

"Some folks might think it OK, others find it offensive," Roger Duren of the Office of Motor Vehicles said. "So, if anyone does, anything offensive we try not to issue."

14. I just keep forgetting how we Americans have an inalienable right to never be offended
in any way, shape or form.

People really ought to get a fucking grip.

3. It may be an overreaction, but that letter combination just doesn't look right to me.
Although I'm sure there was no racist intent behind it, I certainly wouldn't want that on the back of my car. People might get the wrong idea.

18. There are 17,576 possible 3-letter combinations in the standard English alphabet.
Probably half of them look offensive to some thin-skinned idiot somewhere. :eyes:

30. But when they make swear words, they take them out of comission
So if its that close to a word that has the potential of seriously offending someone, wouldn't it be a smart choice to axe those too?

6. Possibly... but if the plate was used in conjunction with a Confederate flag sticker or
something... then I would definitely assume the person was a racist. Would it bother me or ruin my day? No. But they better not try to get over...

10. Well it isn't like there is more than one of them...
unless the DMV thought it was a good idea to issue the same license plate number to... a few hundred?... drivers or cars.

16. omg! hc%d ne1 not b offended!
since no one uses actual words anymore, its even more in the mind of the beholder.

to be safe, they should probably just ban any plate with the letters "n", "c", "f"...

22. What about 'N. W. A.'
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N.W.A subsequently banned from many mainstream U.S. radio stations and even at times prevented from touring

I wonder if the people who are offended by license plates are offended by the deaths of our children in Iraq?

people would not be offended at all. I guess, like beauty, it's in the eye of the beholder.

26. There are other offensive combinations
Did they pull "HBE" (anti-Jewish slur), "GUK" (anti-Asian slur) and "HUN" (anti-German slur), and will they pull "SPC" (anti-Hispanic slur) or "WOP" (anti-Italian slur)?
