Should we be able to elect the VP separate from the President?
Edited on Thu Mar-08-07 11:15 AM by ck4829
These days, the office of the Vice President is becoming increasingly powerful. And, the 'liberal' media never told us the corruption behind how Cheney became the nominee for Vice President (He was the head of the vice-presidential search committee that (surprise!) picked him).

How do you think things would work out if the Vice President was elected separately from the President?

1. I would prefer the
President and Vice President being able to work hand in hand, and that relationship was founded on the presidential nominee hand picking him/her. This administration is unprecedented, never before have we had such a buffoon in office that would set up a situation where the VP gained so much control. Or, perhaps that was the intent all along since everyone knew Darth has a bad ticker and he wouldn't have won as President. I don't recall Gore and (snicker) Quayle ever having as much influence as Cheney - the American people just need to become more educated on their nominees and more diligent about what goes on.

2. Except that it doesn't work out that way
For instance Al Gore and Joe Lieberman.
John Kerry and John Edwards.

The parties pick the running mates and I think it needs to be changed too.

4. I could have sworn
back in 2004 I heard it was the Kerry camp that chose Edwards..

Kerry picks Edwards as vice presidential candidate
By Vasantha Arora, Indo-Asian News Service

Washington, July 6 (IANS) It's official - John Edwards, the freshman senator from North Carolina, will be Democratic contender John Kerry's running mate in the November presidential election.

Kerry called Edwards Tuesday morning to tell him about his choice for vice president. Edwards, it is said, readily accepted.

Kerry chose Edwards over more seasoned politicians perhaps because of his populist views, youthful looks, his energetic new found enthusiasm plus his small-town appeal that could strengthen the Democratic presidential ticket.

3. That would be workable
Separate slots on the ballot. A presidential candidate could (or not) endorse whomever he chose to be VP but I think the separate vote is an outstanding idea.

6. That's how the Constitution originally was set up
In every case, after the choice of the President, the person having the greatest number of votes of the electors shall be the Vice President.

7. Thanks for pointing out our history to those of us who have forgotten......
The separately-elected Pres and VP didn't work out too well....The Founding Fathers decided to change the original plan because of the contentious relationship between the Pres and the VP, I think....not "on the same page", if you will. Was it Jefferson as Pres and "who?" as VP????
