Two Women - Two Hats - Two Candidates ... could it be any clearer?

I was struck by this image of the woman at the Obama rally in Berlin and how it evoked an image from nearly four years ago. The similarities .... and the ENORMOUS difference. There's something far more profound than I can find words to express. The two images - worth far more than a thousand words, it seems.

The point becomes that young thin women have more worth than older heavy women - especially older women who don't get their teeth whitened and don't meet corporate beauty standards.

I was more attuned to their expressions ... one of hope and the other of ridicule and animus. Clearly, the 'band-aid' is a clue but there's a big difference between 'laughing with' and 'laughing at.' But the first really isn't 'laughing' ... more like smiling and a bit teary-eyed. She wears an expression of 'hope' (not to beat the word to death) and seems to have aspirations. The second is more self-satisfied and seemingly disdainful. I thought it was remarkable given the more superficial similarities between them.

Honestly without the bandaid and the bush buttons (in other words, the context), I wouldn't have a clue in the world if bandaid woman was laughing at a democrat or a republican or anything else in the world, based on her expression. I doubt you could read that from her expression, either.

Look at the comments in the thread here, and you'll see exactly what the reaction to the two photos is ... and show me where you posted any comments asking people NOT to take it that way, or telling them you didn't want it interpreted that way.

Cause what I'm seeing is people making comments about her double chin, about her bad teeth, about one being young and beautiful while the other is "fat" and I'm not seeing you objecting to any of those comments. Instead you're spending your time complaining about my comment which pointed out that we shouldn't judge people based on age/weight/beauty. That says something about your intent, you know?

But there's a thread in GD:P where a poster chose his/her favorite pic from the Obama Berlin rally. There's a young black woman who's on the chubby side and a scrawny white woman who's probably in her 60s at least, leaning on each other watching the speech with intense and complex emotions on their faces.

Nobody's making fun of their looks. They're both beautiful in their very different ways. No one disputes this.

In this series, the purple-heart-bandaid woman is ugly for many reasons, but people are ragging on her because what little joy she's showing in this picture comes from an ugly, vicious source: a cruel joke insulting John Kerry's wounds as a veteran. If the exact same woman with the exact same face was in a photo of anti-war protesters, I doubt anyone here would be saying those things.

It's the same reason we make fun of Dennis Hastert or Larry Craig or Trent Lott or Bush himself - there's a certain spiritual ugliness that finds fair expression in the physical.
