I just lost it.
email from someone who I consider a friend. Know is the rightwing friend, but I finally lost it. Here's the email and reply. Fuck. argh.:

Subject: THE IRISH - SUCH CLEAR THINKERS

Leave it to the Irish to cut through the crap and make the whole issue crystal clear...
Thoughts from across the pond. . . .

An email from Ireland to the brethren in the States...a point to ponder despite your political affiliation:

'We, in Ireland, can't figure out why people are even bothering to hold an election in the United States

On one side, you have a pants wearing lawyer, married to a lawyer who can't keep his pants on, who just lost a long and heated primary against a lawyer who goes to the wrong church who is married to yet another lawyer who doesn't even like the country her husband wants to run.

Now...On the other side, you have a nice old war hero whose name starts with the appropriate 'Mc' terminology married to a good looking younger woman who owns a beer distributorship.

What in heaven's name are ye lads thinking over there in the colonies??
------------------------------------------------
Reply:
The problem is that is not "What in heaven's name are ye lads thinking over there in the colonies?", but this is simply promoting more lies and hurting us all. Try this:

On the 1 hand you have a senile old man who graduated almost last in his class in the military and managed to get shot down several times, who spent time as a POW being tortured but STILL supports using the form of torture known as waterboarding, who came back from Vietnam and cheated on his disabled wife before leaving her and his three children and marrying a rich heiress 17 years his junior, obtaining a marriage license for his second marriage while he was still married to his first wife, who voted with the current President 95% of the time in the last 7 yrs (and don't forget that President has the lowest approval numbers of any president for decades due to his lying his way into foreign wars and leading us into a depression), and who own ten homes, valued at more than $13 million, including TWO swanky beach front condos in California while failing to pay taxes on one of those beach homes for the past four years and wants to increase tax cuts for the very rich.

On the other hand, you have a Senator under whom 90% of Americans would pay less taxes under his proposed tax plan, who has denounced racism and is not responsible for out of context remarks by anyone else, whose wife has worked hard to make her country better, who (as a state senator) proposed requiring that interrogations and confessions be videotaped and got it passed and signed by his state governor, who has been a leader in fighting for open and honest government including (again as a state senator) crafting and passing the first ethics and campaign finance law in 25 years in Illinois, who introduced S. 2566 which would expand the cooperative threat reduction concept to conventional weapons, who has worked to end violence against women, who has voted to increase veterans benefits (including for homelessness, tax cuts, ptsd help), who has worked extremely hard to help those affected by Hurricane Katrina rebuild their lives (http://thinkonthesethings.wordpress.com/2007/08/29/when... ), who believes GITMO should be closed and that Human Rights should be bigger than politics and works toward these goals.

Bonus questions:
Who has said on multiple occasions "I didn't really love America until I was deprived of her company"? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/06/19/watch-mccain-d... (McCain)
Can anyone name a single piece of legislation that Obama has proposed or bring up a policy position that has been negatively influenced in any way by his association with Reverend Wright? (Are none)
Have you actually LISTENED to Rev Wright's entire speech and hear what he actually says rather than a clip taken out of context? (I doubt it)
Who is the conservative Evangelical biographer of George W. Bush and Tom DeLay writing a rather positive book about? (Obama)
Who said to his wife"At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c#nt"? (McCain)

So, who do you believe? The swiftboat liars who take quotes out of context, who use lies to try to smear a candidate? Or the candidate that is actually doing something to improve conditions for all but the extremely grossly rich? Are you seriously concerned about the penis of a former president or the color of one running for president now? Why?

Yes. I have a sense of humor. My income is dropping as people are having to cut back all over, gas and food costs are skyrocketing, my grown child is having difficulty finding work and is in danger of being drafted if the Iraq debacle continues or the Powers that Be actually do the insane act of bombing Iran. Those outweigh my ability to laugh at these rightwing lies. Nothing personal, as I consider you a good friend and a very kind and dear person, but please take us off your list for sending on such claptrap. Thank you.

I'm Irish. My friends and family are Irish. I live in an Irish neighborhood. It's funny. Relax anyway. Despite being of dubious Irish ancestry, I think Mr. Obama has this one in the bag. There isn't going to be a draft. If we ever have a war that needs to be fought, we'll simply press a button and send a missile or two at whatever is annoying us.

No, thank you for the offer though. There is no guarentee that that job would not evaporate also. How about just sending business out my way? Or could you use a nurse to read medical documents for you? I can read most anyone's handwriting and have plenty of experience to be able to have a good idea of what looks right and wrong? If you do medical legal stuff.

I hate to hear it's difficult for you to find work as a nurse. I usually encourage people to pursue nursing as a career. Without knowing your situation, have you looked into doing any work with dialysis clinics? It's a growing field that operates in all sorts of locations..

Sorry, habit. I love trying to find jobs for people. I don't have anything that would require your services, as stated. My sister is a nurse in Rhode Island, and my aunt is a nurse in DC. I could ask them?

34. On my annual visits to Dublin and Belfast, I found the Irish furious at Bush
and his administration and all Americans who were stupid enough to vote for him not once, but twice. I'm talking everyone from the bartenders and taxi drivers to a boat captain and several Irish Senators. They also spoke very highly of Bill Clinton and did not make jokes about him. They found it obscene that any political leader would be persecuted because of a brief fling. The Irish, like Europeans in general, are extremely well-informed on the US political scene. They were dead serious about the damage done by the US under Bush and to the US's standing re international influence and leadership. American Irish who find this presidential race something to joke about are probably the same clueless crew who got all teary-eyed and drunk while singing Danny Boy and contributing to smuggling weapons to the IRA, thereby furthering terrorism. The real Irish people, in both Ireland and Northern Ireland, never saw any humor in that situation either.

I have a sense of humor, but not about the upcoming election and the issues at stake.

This particular email was certainly not as bad as much of the racist crap being spammed, but it is typically sent by the same people who send the very worst smears of Dems and Obama. And of course, those spammers NEVER send any thoughtful, serious think pieces out which might help the undereducated American voter understand the basics about economics, health care, deficit spending, substandard VA care, etc.

45. The O'Bama thing is funny

The original email would be funny if the set up before the "Mc with the wife who has a beer distributorship" were re-written.

I mean, to the extent that any "stereotypical ethnic humor" is ever funny, the reasons for not liking Obama should turn on another Irish stereotype.

Obama's on the skinny side... maybe go for a food angle.

But the "Mc" part is funny.

Find something that "Irish don't like" and tie it to some characteristic of Obama.

What is it that Irish "stereotypically" don't like....

...other than, say, comprehensible poetry and/or the English language generally?

37. Don't feel bad--it will pass. I did the same thing to my best friend's dad & hit reply all!
He emailed me the "the economy has gotten worse ever since the congress changed over in 2006" meme. He had never sent me anything before so he must've either sent it by mistake or on purpose. Either way, it ticked me off because I know what a staunch Repuke he is and he knew that I was a strong Dem. He also sent me the "Idiot Quote of the Century" email. So I know he was trying to irritate me.

I went ahead and sent a long rant about people not researching these emails and educated them on the economics 101 and the Federal Reserve. Needless to say nobody I sent it to has ever said a word to me about the email I hit "reply all" to. I knew at least 4 of them on his list--2 were my co-workers.(We live in a small conservative town). My friend did email me and said we would just have to agree to disagree but she never said anything to my face about it. I told her in a reply that she knows very well that I always send positive things and if they're political in nature, they are never anything false or rumorish in nature--they are always from newspapers or the campaign itself--all promoting the candidate. She couldn't disagree with that so nothing was said.

Anyway, it has passed now and some of them have obviously forgotten about it because they haven't been snubbish to me or anything. They just needed to know that not everyone adheres to their belief system. I'm glad I let my beliefs be known finally since everyone else is not afraid to let theirs be known!!

Their national character is one that does not appreciate authoritarians, and they mostly feel the role of government is to help it's citizens rather than murder non-citizens and funnel cash to warmongers.

42. Wonderful rant!
If you're not mad, you're not paying attention. You are obviously paying attention!

I'll tell ya, the part that really got me was "My income is dropping as people are having to cut back all over, gas and food costs are skyrocketing..." Knowing you live in a tourist town on a peninsula, you must be spending a lot on gas, and by extension, food. My sister lives in Michigan--also a peninsula--and is paying through the nose for everything. No wonder you're pissed off.

(Not that you wouldn't have ample reason to be pissed off even if you lived inland.)

51. Lawyers bad.... beer good.
That's really the essence of the joke. I wouldn't classify that as a right-wing propaganda email. It wasn't meant to take seriously.

It just seems like a silly joke, not really mired in politics at all. It's silly.

54. It's a bad joke (conservatives are terrible with humor) playing
on how the Irish like to drink - thus the beer distributorship.

I receieved this one too. I responded that they sure hated accomplished people (it was as if being a lawyer was a bad thing) that McBush is no war hero and that inheriting a beer distributorship is not an accomplishment and takes no effort (unlike getting into a top law school and being editor of the law review).

58. I'm Irish. As such, I've already offered Obama an apostrophe (and he accepted it) hence O'Bama.
NOW he's irish too. So I'd have sent one back that says this:

So we have a lawyer who's married to a lawyer and they live in like the most Irish Big City next to Boston. They cheer with delight each year on St Paddy's Day when they die the river green whilst the old sac and his aristocratic wife lived in A-R-I-Z-O-N-A where they ain't dyin' anything except the dessert, and that's doubtful.

On a serious note, and I don't mean to sound rude, but your response seems a bit...alarmist (I hope you don't get mad at me for saying this)

64. Luck of the Irish, by John Belushi
The Luck of the Irish
written by John Belushi

Jane Curtin: And now we come to St Patrick's Day and John Belushi is here to discuss the luck of the Irish.

John Belushi: Thank you, thank you very much. Well, it's come that time again, St. Patrick's Day has come and gone and well, the sons of Ireland are basking in the glow. When I think of Ireland I think a lot of colorful Irish expressions like, "Top of the morning to ya," "Kiss the barney stone," "May the road rise to meet ya," "May you be in heaven an hour before the devil knows you're dead," "I'd like to smash you in the face with my shillelagh," "Danny-boy," "Begorra," "Wail of the banshee," and "Whiskey for the leprechauns, whisky for the leprechauns." But the expression I think most people identify with the Irish, is, of course, the luck of the Irish.

The luck of the Irish. Sure. Let's say you're in a pub somewhere in Ireland, oh, anywhere in Ireland, some guy comes up to you and says, "Hey is that a bomb on you I hear ticking?" And then BAM!!! Your small intestines are on the ceiling and your brains are on your car across the street. That's the luck of the Irish for ya, who's kidding who, okay?
Let's talk about the bad luck of the Irish, all right? How about this, POTATO FAMINE!! How about that? It scares them, doesn't it? Well, it should. That's why they came here in the first place. So they wouldn't have to work in the potato fields. That's why they became politicians, priests, and cops. Luck? Gimme a break.

(he gets more and more worked up as he continues)

I got a friend, his name is Dan Sullivan, he's Irish as they come. We used to drink together a lot. After two drinks, he would look like an Irish pirate. You know? You think he had luck? In one day he got his car stolen, and the stupid, he had no insurance, and no license, and he gets locked up for being drunk. And after that, he takes off for someplace like India or Nepal, or someplace like that. And his mother dies, ya know, so they wire him to tell him to come to the funeral. It's his mother's funeral, that's all. And he's in India or Nepal, sitting squat-legged listening to some sacred cow. So he comes back and he gets stopped at U.S. Customs for trafficking illegal drugs, not holding, he's trafficking. I mean, here's this guy Sullivan, his old lady kicks off, he gets popped at the border and he's sitting on fifty pounds of black Tibetan finger hash and two keys of slam.

Now that's not bad luck, that's DUMB luck. I don't think luck has anything to do with it, I don't think he has any brains at all. First of all, he's drunk, then he's a junkie. I don't know what's worse! Don't ask me, ask Sullivan! And what happens?! He calls me up and says, "Hey man, I got busted at the border. I need five grand bail." I said, I said, "Five grand man!? Hey man, I've never even seen five thousand dollars in my life, so don't ask me for it, man, why don't you ask your mother!!" (aside) Which was a dumb thing for me to say because his mother just died. (returns to his loud tirade) Right now, I got this drunken Irish junkie who wants to kill me because of what I said about his mother being in terminal dreamland! Oh pal. One thing! One thing!!! They love their mothers, boy, oh they love their mothers. It's momma this, momma that. (starts flailing his arms wildly in the way only John Belushi could) Oh my Irish mother! Ireland must be heaven, because my mother.. aauugghhh! Aaauugghhh!!! (as he flails he nearly slams his head on the desk and then falls off his chair, still screaming)

Jane Curtin: Well, that's the news. Good night, and have a pleasant tomorrow.

66. The Lighthearted Intent Is Pretty Obvious. I Found It To Be Kinda Funny Actually.
It wasn't some freeper minded serious and deluded email. It was just a lighthearted joke using current political cliche.

68. Nah'. You kept it cool. I lost it though. I threw it back last night with this...
It'd be funny if any of it was true. How's that whining about the economy, McSame fans? Cindy McCain looks like a drugged up whore. Her eyes scare me. John McBush is a doddard old fart, who doesn't know Iran is between Iraq and Pakistan, or that Czechoslovakia hasn't been a country in 15 years. Some "expert" on foreign policy. War Hero? He crashed 5 planes! He had to be flown off his carrier because his crew mates were going to kill him for mistaking the missile launch button from the seat ejection lever, and dropped one on the deck. He also is one of the Keating 5... the group of criminals who gave us the S&L scandals of the 80s, and he's the only one who was protected from prosecution. That was during St. Ronny Reagasm's regime. What's that? We have another Mortgage/banking scandal now? How predictable, since Repubs are still in charge.

Michelle Obama at least is beautiful and she doesn't hate her country. Read what she actually said, instead of what this Republican funded e-mail farm says she said. Barak's church (Which is Christian, just in case you were too stupid to believe that "muslim" shit) is none of your business, because his church isn't going keep your son from losing his intestines in Iraq, or charge him $250,000 in surgery to put them back in.

So stop watching Fox Snooz, listening to hate radio (Yes, Limbaugh too) an read once in a while. These people have been lying to you for years, and they've stolen your country out from under you while they distract you with "He invented the Internet" "He shot himself to get a purple heart" "He murdered Vince Foster" "All funded by George Soros" "He had a blow Job" "flip flopper" "Some say John Kerry looks French" "he's a muslim" "Chappaquidick, Chappaquidick, Chappaquidick" and they keep stealing more from you. You want your country to die? Keep Voting Republican, and keep listening to Repubs lie about Democrats.

If anybody laughed at this, They're idiots.
There are two kinds of Republicans... Multi-Millionaires... and Suckers!

Signed; Somebody with the balls to put his name on what he writes, unlike the anonymous Repub coward who smears Irish people with his insanity below. What Irishman would call us a "Colony" anyhow? Oh' yeah. A Repub pretending to be Irish.
<My real name>

---mailer writes---
It's worth the laugh

'We, in Ireland, can't figure out why people are even bothering to hold an election in the United States .

On one side, you have a pants wearing lawyer, married to a lawyer who can't keep his pants on, who just lost a long and heated primary against a lawyer who goes to the wrong church who is married to yet another lawyer who doesn't even like the country her husband wants to run.

Now...On the other side, you have a nice old war hero whose name starts with the appropriate Mc terminology married to a good looking younger woman who owns a beer distributorship.

What in Lords name are you lads thinking over there in the colonies??
