The "bicyclist" who witnessed Bob Novak's hit-and-run is a PARTNER in a major DC Lawfirm...
Story here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=3662795&mesg_id=3662795

...

Bono said the pedestrian, who was crossing the street on a "Walk" signal and was in the crosswalk, rolled off the windshield and then Novak made a right into the service lane of K Street. “The car is speeding away. What’s going through my mind is, you just can’t hit a pedestrian and drive away,” Bono said.

He chased Novak half a block down K St., finally caught up with him and then put his bike in front of the car to block him and called 911. Traffic immediately backed up, horns blared, and commuters finally went into reverse to allow Novak to pull over.

Bono said that throughout, Novak "keeps trying to get away. He keeps trying to go.” He said he vaguely recognized the longtime political reporter and columnist as a Washington celebrity but could not precisely place him.

Finally, Novak put his head out the window of his car and motioned him over. Bono said he told him that you can't hit a pedestrian and just drive away. He said Novak responded: “I didn’t see him there.”

He served as a law clerk to The Honorable Edward R. Becker, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar and the Bars of the United States Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

and stops traffic on K Street to hold a hit-and-run driver until the police respond probably doesn't need a bodyguard.

A good question....doesn't this constitute leaving the scene of an accident? And..."Officer, I didn't see that body roll off my windshield"...wouldn't at least give pause as to why he should even be driving? And...why isn't it on the news....I work from home and I can tell you..I haven't heard anything about this. Why do these scumbags get such protection???!!!!

31. "i didn't see him there" ... that statement makes no sense except as a lie
if you actually didn't see someone, and actually didn't think you hit anyone, the response would have been more like, "what? i didn't hit anyone! what are you talking about?"

i take "i didn't see him there" perhaps as a statement that he didn't hit him deliberately, but that he certainly knew he in fact hit someone and deliberately drove away.

66. "How the bloody hell is Novak not in jail? "
Because we do not throw drivers in jail even when they kill pedestrians or cyclists. Certainly not cyclists. So a mere "brush" will certainly not do it.

A few years ago I had a post about a cyclist being killed while in a very wide bike lane because the driver supposedly was leaning toward his glove compartment.

This was a very long and hot thread, where many bashed cyclists - often deserve - while others kept saying that a flesh and blood has no chance with a mass of steel.

In the local paper a few weeks ago, someone complained about getting a ticket for a "rolling stop" - as he called it, that when turning right on red, he just glanced to see whether a car was coming. And someone replied that often those turns - right on red or left on green - often just look at cars, not at cyclists and pedestrians.

Until we throw drivers in jail, first, and bail later - for hitting pedestrians at crosswalks or cyclists on bike lane - nothing will change. Novak or not.

75. Hit and run is a felony. What you describe is negligent assault.
Novak committed a felony in front of many extremely credible witnesses. He should have been charged, booked, and brought before a judge to determine bail.

what a piece of crap Novak is. He makes his living lying and undermining democracy. He commits treason, outing a CIA operative. He runs over a pedestrian and drives away.

69. Time heals all wounds and wounds all heels: we all know what would happen to most of us
should we have hit that pedestrian and ran. We'll see how it plays out for this callous 'puke hypocrite, if having the right politics will help in this instance. :D

71. He's assaulted people before and then ran away!
I was covering the primaries in 2004 and Caught the guy that Novak Assaulted outside a restaurant after doing a Crossfire segment - after Novak shoved the guy 10 feet back on the ice, and the man (who was not a small guy) fell backwards into my arms, Novak RAN into the CNN bus.. A crowd formed and was going wild, all witnesses. I went over to the bus and beat on the door, demanding that Novak come out and apologize, make things right..

He refused, instead some chipper little producer blew us off, people were milling about refusing to leave..

Me and three other witnesses went over to the New Hampshire Police Station to make a complaint and press charges. We wanted to gain Discovery on Novak and then have a lawyer ask him under Oath about Valerie Plame, get a Juicy story, get the goods on him.

Nothing came of it, but if someone wanted PROOF of his prediliction for Hit And Run, I'm sure there's a police report to that effect..

Maybe I should contact the Smoking Gun people and help them Fuck Novack :)

It was frightening, the guy is nuts, and I can spot it, after having worked in two Institutions...

77. I remember that incident.
like so many repugs he sounds completely unhinged. So typical of bullying behavior-hit someone and then run like hell. Seems like he belongs in an institution himself!

72. Interesting...
"Finally, Novak put his head out the window of his car and motioned him over. Bono said he told him that you can't hit a pedestrian and just drive away. He said Novak responded: “I didn’t see him there.”

I thought novak said, he didn't know he hit anyone.

saying, "I didn't see him there". Plainly, infers that he knew someone was in the crosswalk.

novak is screwed. LOL

81. If I'm a lawyer and I hear, "I didn't see HIM THERE," my immediate thought is
"You didn't see WHO WHERE?"

A more "innocent" exclaim might have been, "A pedestrian? Where?"

80. How do you not notice a person landing on your windshield?
On a city street. In broad daylight. This does not pass the smell test.
