David Gregory: NBC's Lame-Duck?

by Felix Gillette | July 22, 2008

.... Thank you very much, David Gregory, our NBC White House correspondent and, of course, star of MSNBCs The Road to the White House, said Mr. Brokaw. Mr. Gregory managed not to grimace. His show is called Race for the White House.

Chuck Todd, our political director, continued Mr. Brokaw. Well be seeing a lot more of you, here, on Meet the Press in the weeks to come, Mr. Brokaw said, it seemed, to Mr. Todd. ....

Halfway through his stint at the 6 p.m. hour on MSNBC, Mr. Gregorys numbers are solid but not remarkable. For the second quarter of 2008 (from late March to late June), Race for the White House averaged roughly 526,000 total viewers and 161,000 in the 25-54 demographicroughly twice the audience that Tucker Carlson averaged during the second quarter of 2007.

Twice Tucker is a form of damnation by faint praise.

And numbers for Race for the White House have been relatively flat from month to month, suggesting that Mr. Gregory has already attracted the audience that will recognize and follow his name. Now its a question of what his show can do. And while his colleagues at MSNBC have been stirring up controversy and grabbing attention from viewers inside the Beltway at every turn, Mr. Gregory has yet to make much noise. ....

Sherri Sleeps

BARBARA Walters must miss the days of Star Jones and Rosie O'Donnell. The latest embarrassment on "The View," Sherri Shepherd, who once said she thinks the world is flat, tells Christian magazine Precious Times about her past: "I was sleeping with a lot of guys and had more abortions than I would like to count." Shepherd, a born-again Christian, also thinks Walters, who is Jewish, needs saving. "Oh, sometimes I say, 'Lord, Juanita Bynum or Joyce Meyer would be so good at this table. They could lay hands on Barbara and get her saved.' "

We hear...

THAT Luke Russert made such a good impression on TV viewers after his father Tim's funeral, insiders say NBC is recruiting him for its team covering the presidential election.

1. I tried watching "Road To the White House' - found the cross-talk unwatchable
I've come to the conclusion I'm not watching any more shout fests where people talk all over each other and nobody listens to anybody else.
I find the "old" style of interview such as Charlie Rose or Jim Lehrer much more enlightening and informative.

3. I actually enjoy watching it
Then again, my idea of annoying cross-talking "shout fests" is colored by the old Pat Buchanan-era CrossFire program on CNN where it seemed as though the the guests and hosts were perpetually in danger of being hosed down by the producers.

By those standards I've found Gregory's program to be pretty restrained. The closest I ever saw it get to old CrossFire territory was when Scarborough and Maddow went at it during primary season and Scarborough walked off set during a commercial break.

2. OK I give up. Which one is only a half barf?
My guess is the gregory piece. Since it kinda sorta makes him look like a schmuck.

4. Sherri Shepherd is dumber than a stump
Somebody need to tell her that we Jews aren't particularly fond of hearing that we need to be saved.

Damn. She almost makes Hasselbeck seem like a brainiac.

6. I was impressed with Luke Russert - sure beats alot of people they have on
I wouldn't mind having him contribute his viewpoint - they have very few young people on who aren't brainwashed by their own extreme ideology.
