South Carolina Senator says that opposing social conservatism is the same as opposing free speech
"I’ve really seen a lot of intimidation around South Carolina and around the country. People are afraid to say certain things are wrong and to make value judgments because they have been told that that’s hateful and it’s intolerant. …

Before the sixties, we knew abortion was wrong, and sex outside of marriage, and unwed births, pornography, homosexuality. Yet if you look now, the official or at least implicit position of the government (is) that all these things are right. And if you say they’re wrong, you’re going to be called down in the media, in the schools, and even in the churches. …

What we’re losing is our freedom of speech
."

- Jim DeMint (South Carolina - Republican Party)

1. no, Jim.
Being "called down" doesn't violate your right to say whatever you want. It just means you can't say fool shit without being called a fool.

But by all means, let us know what's on your mind.

2. He's wrong! I don't think anyone is telling the "social conservatives"
that they can't say and believe whatever they wish. What people are telling them is that they CAN'T tell everyone else they have to believe and behave as they do!

I used to live in SC. Notice that I put quotations around the name "social conservative"! There are SOME I'm sure, but by farm the majority who claim they are, are simply hypocrits! They tell everyone else what to think and how to act, but in secrecy, THEY are the ones breaking all their own moral laws!

4. You Want To Talk Free Speech?
Back in the fifties, if a person said he (or she) was a homosexual, the vast majority of society called him a pervert. They got called down - lost jobs and the media wouldn't even talk about it because the so called "decency" folk would shut down the paper. What about when it was illegal to publish and mail information about birth control - wasn't that a violation of free speech?

What about schools that can only teach abstinence for sex education? Isn't that a violation of free speech?

5. And men could beat their wives. Drunk driving was a joke. And Blacks couldn't vote in the South.

6. Don't forget Interracial Marriage.
But wait a minute, is he objecting to these people being ostracized for expressing their opinions?

The anti-Obama church sign.

The KKK store in Laurens.

Speaking of which, McCain's now former co-chair Phil Gramm funded some porn movies in the 1970s.
Pot calling the kettle black?
