GOP cyber-security expert suggests Diebold tampered with 2002 election Larisa Alexandrovna and Muriel Kane
Published: Friday July 18, 2008

A leading cyber-security expert and former adviser to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) says he has fresh evidence regarding election fraud on Diebold electronic voting machines during the 2002 Georgia gubernatorial and senatorial elections.

Stephen Spoonamore is the founder and until recently the CEO of Cybrinth LLC, an information technology policy and security firm that serves Fortune 100 companies. At a little noticed press conference in Columbus, Ohio Thursday, he discussed his investigation of a computer patch that was applied to Diebold Election Systems voting machines in Georgia right before that state's November 2002 election.

..............

Spoonamore received the Diebold patch from a whistleblower close to the office of Cathy Cox, Georgia’s then-Secretary of State. In discussions with RAW STORY, the whistleblower -- who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation -- said that he became suspicious of Diebold's actions in Georgia for two reasons. The first red flag went up when the computer patch was installed in person by Diebold CEO Bob Urosevich, who flew in from Texas and applied it in just two counties, DeKalb and Fulton, both Democratic strongholds. The source states that Cox was not privy to these changes until after the election and that she became particularly concerned over the patch being installed in just those two counties.

The whistleblower said another flag went up when it became apparent that the patch installed by Urosevich had failed to fix a problem with the computer clock, which employees from Diebold and the Georgia Secretary of State’s office had been told the patch was designed specifically to address.

8. I will never forgive former Democratic GA SoS Cathy Cox for converting us to 100% Diebold in 2002.
Previous to 2000, I had met with her in her office at the capitol regarding a professional licensing issue (the SoS's office is in charge of professional licensing boards) and was very impressed with her. She was politically ambitious and could have been our first woman governor. Then came 2000 and 2002 and it was almost all over for Democrats in Georgia. Since then, the Georgia Republican party and elected Republican national, state and local officials have proceeded to totally fuck up our once most progressive state in the South.
:(

9. SEE! I HAVE BEEN SCREAMING THIS FOR 6 LONG YEARS!!!!!!!!
Dekalb and Fulton counties could effectively counter the rest of the state in sheer democratic voting numbers.

See!!!! There is no way that Max Cleland, who had a double digit polling lead and double digit exit polling numbers somehow lost to Sackofshit Shameless by double digits.

There is also no way Roy Barnes, also leading strongly in polls, lost by double digits to that idiot simpleton, SonnyBubba Perdue.

GOD DAMN IT!!!!!!!! I FREAKIN' WANT MY STATE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!

10. Wasn't there some sort of weird Diebold email or message or
programming thread or something that had a name like "GAtest" ? I seem to vaguely recall that somewhere in the dim recesses. I don't think that's what it was exactly called, but I remember that it seemed to be about Georgia.

Did E-Vote Firm Patch Election?
Kim Zetter Email 10.13.03

Diebold Election Systems has had a tumultuous year, and it doesn't look like it's getting any better.

Last January the electronic voting machine maker faced public embarrassment when voting activists revealed the company's insecure FTP server was making its software source code available for everyone to see.

Then researchers and auditors who examined code for the company's touch-screen voting system released two separate reports stating that the software was full of serious security flaws.

Now a former worker in Diebold's Georgia warehouse says the company installed patches on its machines before the state's 2002 gubernatorial election that were never certified by independent testing authorities or cleared with Georgia election officials.

If the charges are true, Diebold could be in violation of federal and state election-certification rules. ........

13. If there is anything new, please do tell us.
In fact, some of the known facts are left out.

The whistle blower is a known person, for example, and has been interviewed.

The only thing new I see is that "a Republican" is telling us what we have known for nearly six years now. That should make everyone suspicious!!

14. Sometimes it's more about the TIMING of rehashing old news
than whether it's really new news. I can't think of a better time to bring this back up than now. At least those of us on DU will remember WHY WE LOST A GIMME ELECTION THAT SEEMED LIKE IT WAS REALLY IN THE BAG and WHY THE SAME FREAKIN THING COULD HAPPEN AGAIN.

Yeah, and if it did happen again, I'm sure President McAnus would appoint a commission or something to INVESTIGATE THE "ALLEGED" IMPROPRIETIES and take appropriate action. Diebold must be quakin in their boots.
