The House Judiciary Committee may let anti-war Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich present his case for impeaching President Bush before the August recess, the panel’s chairman said Monday.

Chairman John Conyers Jr., D-Mich., said Judiciary will take a broad look at the behavior of the Bush administration, and Kucinich can lay out his arguments as part of that as-yet unscheduled hearing.

Kucinich, D-Ohio, intends to formally offer a resolution on Tuesday that accuses Bush of lying to Congress in order to get approval to invade Iraq.

Conyers said he wants a public discussion of the issues being raised by Kucinich, but does not plan to take any action on the resolution. “We’re not doing impeachment, but he can talk about it,” the chairman said.

He said such a hearing would continue oversight of the executive branch that has included hearings on the exposure of the name of CIA operative Valerie Plame and the firing of U.S. attorneys.

The resolution that Kucinich has told the House to expect on Tuesday will be his fourth impeachment measure.

An earlier resolution against Bush (HRes 1258) and two against Vice President Dick Cheney (H Res 333, H Res 799) were referred to Conyers’ committee, which took no action on them.

And Bushco has the goods on him.

If Conyers were clean, he'd have no reason to not act on something of this severity. Conyers is complicit in Bushco's crimes. He needs to go. John Conyers IS NOT DOING HIS JOB, which is to protect the Constitution.

When you have a pResident LIE to Congress and the American people in order to start an unnecessary war, in which thousands of U.S. Soldiers will lose their lives, and nothing is done about it, members of Congress who do not act are just as guilty as Bush. They are not protecting the Constitution, they are allowing it to be compromised.

(WXYZ) Our reporting partners at the Detroit News are reporting that the FBI has electronic surveillance that links Detroit City Council President Pro Tem Monica Conyers to the Synagro scandal.

The evidence reportedly proves that Conyers received either a payment or payments in connection with the city-approved sludge contract.

DETROIT -- Sam Riddle is no snitch. The Detroit political warhorse says his answer was simple when FBI agents approached him to wear a wire to ensnare onetime client, Detroit Councilwoman Monica Conyers.

"I told them to go f--- themselves," Riddle said Tuesday over a bowl of oatmeal. He laughed. "If you want to indict my black a--, then indict me."

Riddle said he was stunned to learn he is part of an FBI probe into the City Council's approval of a $47 million contract to handle sludge removal. At the time of the November vote, he served as a political consultant to Conyers, who initially opposed the deal and then reversed course and supported it.

This afternoon, at approximately 5 p.m. (EDT), the Clerk of the House of Representatives will give the first reading of the Article of Impeachment of President George Bush. Article One charges the President with deceiving Congress with fabricated threats of Iraq WMDs to fraudulently obtain support for an authorization of the use of military force against Iraq.

Once the Clerk reads the bill, I will move to refer the bill to the Judiciary Committee for hearings. I believe the American people have a right to an open airing of the charges against this President. Did he or did he not lie to take us into a war? I believe the evidence is overwhelming that President Bush knew that Iraq was not an imminent threat, was not in possession of WMDs at the time, and had nothing to do with 911 or with al Queda's role in 911. And yet, despite having facts to the contrary, he took the U.S. into war with devastating consequences for our troops, our nation, and the people of Iraq. Congress must hold hearings.

It's baby steps...and tangible progress that voices are being heard, just not in the ears that would make a difference. I'm looking forward to these hearings and I hope Kucinich invites Jon Turley, John Dean, Bruce Fein and several other Constitutional scholars to make this hearing one that lays the groundwork and explains to all not just why impeachment should move forward but also what the process entails. I'd like to hearing what Judiciary Committee members are thinking and let the chips fall where they may.
