After one week of self-imposed TV news moratorium, I tuned back in and...

That lasted about 30 seconds.

The next step is to turn off the teevee altogether and reserve its use for DVDs and major breaking events only.

Edited to correct grammar: Using "it's" where it is not and replacing it with "its" where it is.

1. Good for you! You'll be a happier person
I haven't watched TV in over 20 years, and reading comments here makes me ever more thankful for my decision.

2. I shitcanned broadcast news in 2004
and was amazed by how little I missed it. It had only been a habit, tuning in and ruining my dinner with the combination of rubbish and lies of omission, and that habit was remarkably easy to break.

I did get satellite two years ago while I was recovering from surgery and had few opportunities for diversion. I watch movies, interior desecration, science and history shows, and the magnificently bitchy Top Chef. I still don't bother with news.

I guess I just got sick of being talked down to and lied to.

It looks like I'm not alone.

4. I shitcaned it april 9th 2003
the day the Saddam statue was pulled down by a supposed huge crowd. CNN showed this huge crowd, then I happened on the BBC showing of the same event. There were about 30 people in the square. I turned off cable and network propaganda that moment and have never ever missed it. Turn that shit off people!

8. Most of the people in that crowd were reporters.

3. Here's a great list I found of "Alternative Media," "Progressive Media"
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 12:04 PM by KoKo01
that's worth tuning in.

Here's what our family has been listening to for the last week and particularly on the Weekend.....Go to Common Dreams Website and scroll down to the bottom left and click on any of the links and BE FREE of the CORPORATE MC MEDIA! I recommend "Media Matters Radio" "Radio Nation" "Hightower Radio"....but there are many others. Enjoy.!

http://www.commondreams.org/

I couldn't stand it anymore, either, because it's all Repug Propaganda with anchors who are so "seemingly clueless" that they are unbearable to watch or listen to. Many of them allow you to listen on podcast or to watch archives of their shows and you can listen for days and hear "real news/real issues" and never turn your TV on again. Unlike "Air America" most of these are "commercial free."

6. Congratulations, but be careful, that's how we stopped watching and
now we are social outcasts because we can no longer talk with "Murakinz".

7. I can no more watch teevee news anymore than I can listen to
music booming from a car on my street in the middle of the night. It's that repulsive. There are plenty of good outlets you can use without putting yourself through that.

9. I have only been watching shows that have
no socially redeeming value whatsoever. I get so disgusted every time I turn to CNN or MSNBC. I tuned into Press the Meet this morning and started screaming at Carly Fiorina as soon as she opened her mouth. Brokaw wasn't any better. I watched about 5 minutes of it and turned back to a vacuous movie and was able to calm down.

11. I only use TV for sports events,
movies and documentaries ("In the Shadow of the Moon" as example).

I stopped watching any "news" completely in 2004 and did so briefly during the Primaries, until the only network I watched (MSNBC) went over the top on Tim Russert's death.

You will be much happier for it.
