I'm proud to report that a non-profit pulled together in my wonderful and generous hometown of Kalamazoo, MI is offering free gasoline to people who can prove they have the need. It's a religious organization, but before you draw any conclusions let me tell you that this church is a very progressive church. It's GLBT affirming (the congregation stood solidly behind and supported a gay congregant who went to seminary and went on to ordination) and they have had a female pastor in the past if I'm not mistaken. They also had a large display in their lawn protesting the Iraq war. These are true Christians, not of the fundamental or evangelical brand.

They do accept donations, so if you're fortunate enough to be in a position where you could afford to support this wonderful organization, please consider doing so. You'll find a link to their site below.

Here's the lowdown:

KALAMAZOO -- A local religious group has launched what they believe is a first-in-the-nation assistance program for low-income people having trouble paying for gasoline. The nonprofit program operates under the name Free Gas USA Inc., and it's taking applications for gas grant cards that range in value from $50 to $1,200, depending on people's needs and circumstances.

-snip-

"Those in need can get assistance with food and other needs, but with the cost of gas today, we thought that they should get help with that, too," the Rev. William Stein said. "We looked around and couldn't find another program like this. We are unique in that regard." The program is affiliated with Baptism Ministries USA, an inter-denominational ministry based at the Church of the Brethren, 394 S. Drake Road, in Oshtemo Township, of which Stein is the pastor.

-snip-

In order to be eligible for a gas card, a person's yearly income must be at or below the "very low income limit" category as defined for specific geographic locations by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Stein said. That number in Kalamazoo County is $21,200.

Anyone in the United States and its territories can apply for a gas card, provided they are U.S. citizens. The gas cards are awarded monthly and there is no limit to the number of cards a person can apply for, Stein said. To save on mailing costs, those interested in the program can only access application documents on the group's Web site. Each applicant also must include a copy of his or her most recent tax return and referral letter from a human service agency or church stating their need, Stein said.

1. Thank you so much for sharing this, KzooDem. It may give my daughter some much needed
Edited on Fri Jul-11-08 11:49 PM by vickiss
hope.

Single mom, age 29, one boy going into second grade, commutes to school 30 miles one-way. She helps my mother, 74, does all of her cleaning and took amazing care of her grandma through two cancers. She even ended up skipping a couple of semesters to make sure my mom was okay.

She is an amazing young woman that has gotten pretty far since she developed, and was diagnosed, with PTSD at ages 14 and 17. This program could help ease her stress so much. And mine a bit also!

Thank you again. :)

4. I'm sure there are dialysis patients that need help - they are disabled & must get treatment 3 x per

week.

Most dialysis patients are on disability (SSA, Medicare, Medicaid), and they absolutely MUST drive themselves to dialysis treatments 3 times a week.

For most dialysis patients, public transportation is not feasible post-treatment.

On a limited income, hikes in gas really hurt some of these patients who rely on dialysis to live.

5. Great idea. In my town, the city has volunteers giving rides to seniors
for a $3 fee; so many can't afford to have a car anymore.

6. THANKS! A friend with 1 lung and cancer can use this, for sure.
I am publisher of a new magazine launching next month and will put this on page 1 to help people in our rural community. What a wonderful philanthropic effort!

7. K&R
I'm lucky to live pretty close to where I work, but these gas prices rose so much so fast. People in my area often work 30-40 miles from home and had no warning they'd need to double their gas budgets in four months or find housing closer to town. I'm there are a lot of families who're hurting big time. I'm just afraid the church will be overwhelmed with applications and they won't have enough volunteers to help then sort through them all.
