Seven Republican Members of House Judiciary Call for Impeachment out of Duty to the Constitution
http://www.opednews.com/articles/1/Seven-Republican-Mem...

GOP Reps. Smith, Sensenbrenner, Coble, Gallegly, Goodlatte, Chabot, and Cannon after much deliberation put the Constitution and rule of law before politics. Rep. Lamar Smith stated, As much as one might wish to avoid this process, we must resist the temptation to close our eyes and pass by. The president's actions must be evaluated for one simple reason: the truth counts. Read their statements below.

Good for them!.. (Read the link)

18. Nahhh... Nancy will never go for it.
She might have some legal exposure because of her own complicity.

Aren't the Nuremburg Principles still in effect? Specifically:

Principle VII

Complicity in the commission of a crime against peace, a war crime, or a crime against humanity as set forth in Principle VI is a crime under international law.

69. Article is about Clinton's Impeachment being called for by those Repug Judiciary
Committee members...and one does wonder why they aren't hung on their own Petard by saying nothing now. But, it's up to our Dems to really start the ball rolling...and they are still reluctant. :-(

This is the best post of the day, IMHO.

But then, I'm having my car repaired and almost ANY post could have done it.

Seriously, I called John Conyers office and did a rant with the young man who answered.

Fascinating turn of events since I posted that.

Cordially,

52. Here's the author rationalizing this POS of an "article"-
a reply to the article-

"Not funny.

I almost had a heart attack. ?Sensenbrenner? - my head was spinning.

Of course these slugs have a completely opposite line to cover up for their own.

You don't know how I wish for a miracle - that these repubLIEcons experience a healing of their brains. A healing that would give them some morality and ethics.

I'll go back to being depressed now. "

by AllDems08 (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 47 comments) on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 5:34:18 AM

a reply from the author-

"no...

don't be depressed alldems. their #'s are attached. simply in a respectful, yet firm way ask each to be a man of his word. remind them of their convictions, how the constitution meant so much to them and how they should allow the process to work - that all the evidence be made available within the confines of an impeachment hearing (that cannot be tampered with or ignored) and let the chips fall where they may.

and...in all seriousness, I was not trying to be funny. a little sneaky maybe, but not funny. there is no fiction here. this is a straight news piece. members of congress and the public needed to be reminded of their positions. chin up alldems! use it!"

They only do what they do and say what they say out of desperate self-preservation. There is no context. There is no truth in their positions. Their only defense to their misguided policies is to lie about the facts. Its beyond misguided. Its downright criminal. The GOP gives reptiles a bad name.

And while they will not be personally shamed by the truth, the shame of the truth should be made clear to their constituents.

They are only here to screw us. Who doesnt know or accept that by now?

Well, just wait. Its going to get a lot worse before it gets better. And that is conceding that Obama actually gets elected despite GOP voter fraud and vote manipulation. They have set up our agenda to fail and McCains agenda is set up to finally cut the throat of our democracy.

Isn't that what Nancy Pelosi said? That it was off the table because the Republicans would block it? How does she know they will?

The Republicans didn't block it with Nixon. They probably won't block it with Bush. How will we know unless Nancy Pelosi allows it and they are reminded of their "altruism" with regard to Bill Clinton? People were shocked by the Republicans with Nixon. They may be shocked by the Republicans with Bush.

Sensenbrenner is pretty much as close to a Nazi as you can get, and he cares about
as much for our Constitution as Robert Mugabe. That this was a collection of Republican
justifications for the impeachment of Bill Clinton was obvious as soon as I saw the names.

These guys wouldn't vote for the impeachment of Bush if he declared war on Canada with
the stated intention of getting their oil fields, their maple trees, and Vancouver island.

These guys wouldn't vote for the impeachment of Bush if he ordered overt surveillance on
all people, jailed people for voting Democratic, killed his brother Neil live on the
11 o'clock news, and declared the Bill of Rights "inoperative" by executive order.

I like the idea of throwing their words in their faces but this article is intentionally misleading, especially since you have to go several pages forward to the end of the article to discover the truth.

62. Some very good examples
Edited on Sat Jul-12-08 09:27 AM by vpilot
of blatant Republican hypocrisy. Where is the indignation and righteousness now? I particularly like this one:
Sensenbrenner: (R-WI) "The framers of the Constitution devised an elaborate system of checks and balances to ensure our liberty by making sure that no person, institution or branch of government became so powerful that a tyranny could be established in the United States of America. Impeachment is one of the checks the framers gave the Congress to prevent the executive or judicial branches from becoming corrupt or tyrannical."
Wonder why this doesn't apply now?
Gallegly (R-CA) "He violated the Constitution. To condone this would be to condemn our society to anarchy. Mr. Chairman, I cannot and will not condone such action."
If the people quoted in the article truly believed any of what was said back in 1998 it should apply today, since it appears they don't have those views now I have to think all of them quoted are HYPOCRITES and PHONY to the core.
  • Lamar Smith (R-TX)
  • Sensenbrenner (R-WI)
  • Howard Coble (R-NC)
  • Elton Gallegly (R-CA)
  • Bob Goodlatte (R-VA)
  • Steve Chabot (R-OH)
  • Chris Cannon (R-UT)

Because that is what this is about.

68. I think it is about pointing out how pointless and principle-less that
action and their rationales at the time really were - given that they have done NOTHING over much more serious constitutional offenses over the past seven plus years.

whole swaths of the constitution, he doesn't really seem to care - indeed acts to accelerate it.

74. hey - I posted on this - but about the irony- which I assumed was the point.
The gopers are empty suits. They don't give a damn about the constitution. This thread is an example about that and reminds folks that the same dudes on the committee who are apopleptic about those raising the issue for much more serious grounds than the clenis in 1998, came out with such a serious sounding "protecting the rule of law" to introduce their intention of impeachment nine years ago.

However there are a number who haven't read the link closely enough to get that - can't speak for them.

76. nope.
I just like to comment on blatant GOP hypocrisy and ugliness when I see it - but no I didn't rec.

The funny thing is that near the top of the thread is the first comment (followed by many others) that the post title points out this is from 1998 - seems like some folks can't be bothered to scan the thread nor to read the linked item. It is they who add to the confusion.

77. This is about impeaching Clinton not Bush!
Though if they weren't hypocrites, they would have also impeached Bush long ago. But then they are hypocrites.

83. Sensenbrenner is just awful. I have to think this means that the rats think
the Bush ship is going to sink and are starting to leave it, because I can't see these people honestly "upholding the truth."

85. These quotes are from 1998!

From the article:
The statements above are excerpts from transcripts of the House Judiciary Committee's impeachment hearings. December 10-11, 1998. Each congressman is a current member of the House Judiciary Committee.

88. I don't like playing that game
I would kind of rather just wait and see who else comes here ready and raring to award the Rethugs the medal of honor for impeaching Clinton.

I think that is what the proprietors of this site are doing too?

It may not have been clear to all that this article includes quotes from 1998 and is referring to the Clinton impeachment. In light of the confusion, this thread is being locked.

cheers,
