Ernest Hemmingway had an unhealthy and masochistic obsession with machismo. Probably normal for the typical adolescent boy, but rather stunted and troubling I think for a mature adult.

When I was a kid I was into all that stuff. Hemingway, Robert Ruark, Jack London, Jim Corbett, I think I read every book there was about the "great white hunters" of early 20th century Africa. J.A. Hunter was my idol and a father figure to a kid with no father. I was pretty much obsessed with a dream of blasting my way across the Serengeti with a Holland & Holland .470 nitro express. That was 40 years ago. By 18 I came to the conclusion that dry-gulching an unsuspecting animal from a distance was no sport and offered me no pleasure. The only thing I'd consider hunting now would be poachers and trophy hunters. In a few areas in Africa rangers are given authority to shoot poachers on sight and I am totally down with that.

I have even less regard for these insecure, self-obsessed macho pricks that kill bulls for "glory". Not enough of these assholes die or else they wouldn't do it. Before the bull even enters the ring they've been weakened with laxatives, then one or both of the picadores shoves a lance into the bull's neck to weaken the neck muscles, then 3 other dicks each shove razor sharp sticks into the area around the lance wound. These sticks are barbed so they remain in the wound flopping about causing further blood loss by keeping the wounds open. The total of seven stab wounds are meant to prevent the bull from vigorously lifting his head. The blood loss and laxatives serve to sap the vigor of the bull. If the fucked up spectacle was stopped at this point, many of the animals would die from the treatment already received. In fact, from my reading, most of the bulls spared from death in the arena do die from infection and blood loss.

As for the hard-on inducing "moment of truth", I'll quote someone else giving the details: "The matador, two picadors on horses, and three men on foot stab the bull repeatedly when he enters the ring. After it has been weakened by fear, blood loss, and exhaustion, the matador attempts to make a clean kill with a sword to the heart. Unfortunately for the suffering bull, he rarely succeeds, and must make several thrusts, often missing the bull's heart and piercing his lungs instead. Often a dagger must be used to cut the spinal cord and spare the audience the sight of a defenseless animal in the throes of death. The bull may still be fully conscious but paralyzed when his ears and tail are cut off as the final show of "victory."" Further, last year up to 90% of the 24,000 thousand(!) terrified, weakened, and trapped, bulls killed in 1987 in Spain had their horns shortened causing the bull to miss with his thrusts.

One final quote, including a "hilarious" description by the macho-man himself, of the picadore's horse being disemboweled: " It's not just the bulls that suffer. According to Lyn Sherwood, publisher of an English-language bullfight magazine, horses used in bullfights are "shot behind the ear with dope. The horses are drugged and blindfolded and they're knocked down a lot." These horses, who are often gored, usually have wet newspaper stuffed in their ears to impair their hearing, and their vocal cords are usually cut so their cries do not distract the crowd. These animals are often old, tired plow horses who end up being knocked down by bulls weighing up to a half a ton.
American author Ernest Hemingway wrote in his book Death in the Afternoon, "In the tragedy of the bullfight, the horse is the comic character ... I have seen it, people running, horse emptying, one dignity after another being destroyed in the spattering and trailing of its innermost values , in a complete burlesque of tragedy. I have seen these, call them disembowellings, that is the worst word. When due to their timing, they were very funny. This is the sort of thing you should not admit, but it is because such things have not been admitted that the bullfight has never been explained."" Yes, very funny indeed. I admit I'm not schooled enough to fully appreciate this wordy and wonderful description. It's pretty opaque to me, but I did get the idea that a horse was running around trailing it's guts and that this was "very funny". How can I conclude anything else but that the author of preceding paragraph was a jerk. Perhaps he came to the same conclusion himself in his own "moment of truth" when he decided to blow the top of his head off with both barrels of a shotgun. I don't know, I can only hope.

As for the hundreds, or thousands, of idiots, still unconvinced of their own gender, that goad and torment the bulls on the way to slaughter, I have nothing to say. Their actions speak for themselves.

Last year there was some guy, a husband and father of two I think, who, when he saw someone fall onto the train tracks dove down and shielded the other man with his own body while the train passed over the two of them. That was no egotistical dick finally ending the torment of a frightened, and weakened, dumb animal. That was a real man, a real act of bravery that had a fucking purpose btw, and a real moment of truth.

I just thought the run was the entire process -- even then, I always rooted for the bulls. When I found out they were being run to the rings to their deaths, then I REALLY started rooting for the bulls!
