I almost drove off the road listening to BBC news today
The subject (animal cruelty) isn't funny at all, but the hushed presentation made my laugh. With all that is going on in the world, UN Peacekeepers killed, Iran shooting testing rockets, FISA, BBC chose to do a long segment on a "rabbit murderer".

Rabbit ripper shocks Germany

Seventy-four-year-old Elfriede Dumont invites me into her back garden.Small and neat, there are little fir trees dotted around the lawn, tubs of flowers on the terrace and rows of firewood stacked neatly by the fence.

There used to be a rabbit hutch, too, at the end of the garden. But not any more. "One morning, when I came out to feed my rabbits, I was surprised to see that the hutch door was open," recalls Elfriede. "I looked inside and saw Rocco just lying there. His head was missing. A little later I found Felina in the bushes. She'd been killed, too. I just cannot understand why."

Rocco and Felina are among the 30 pet rabbits killed in the towns of Witten and Dortmund since last summer. Many of the rabbits have been decapitated and the blood drained from their bodies. It is one of the most shocking cases of animal cruelty that Germans can remember.

Police fear the attacker could switch from killing rabbits to killing people. They have set up a special task force to try to track down the killer. They are examining rabbit torsos for possible traces of DNA and they have questioned 300 people. But police admit they still have no idea who is decapitating the rabbits and why. ...(more@ link)

Odd, very odd.

1. Rabbits are adored in Germany. They are a favorite and much loved pet.
They run wild in the busy downtown area parks and avenues and people admire them...photograph them...but ..never...ever.. harass them in any way.

It's a big deal here...the rabbit murders.

11. It reminded me of Wallace and Grommit's WereRabbit movie
I bet it is quite a concern to those involved and I feel sorry for everyone there. Very odd thing to have going on.

I could hear Wallace though, talking about his bun-o-matic bunnie sucking machine.

2. It's an insult. This is primarily a German domestic issue, not an international issue of importance
If they wanted to cover an important domestic issue inside a country, one would've guessed that the Senate and House voting to throw the 4th Amendment under the bus ranked higher than a rabbit killer. I mean, the Germans openly call Bush a fascist over there.

3. I have pet rabbits
and I love them as much as my dogs. If I had found them like that I would have been devastated.

4. No surprise the police are concerned about a potential human serial killer. Been known to happen.

5. Probably a big deal to them.
Just animals, though. You're right. Just because "It is one of the most shocking cases of animal cruelty that Germans can remember" doesn't make it newsworthy.

6. Mass murderers of humans often mutilate/kill animals at some point
I'm just sayin', maybe finding the person responsible is a good thing...

12. It is a good thing to find the person at any rate. About causality though...
Or correlations, mass murderers of humans often drank milk at some point also. It works looking backwards (mass murderers killed bunnies0 rather than forwards (bunny murderers become human mass murderers). I hope they catch the person, it would be upsetting to have this happen in a small community.
