Jesse Helms. RIP. And, in anticipation of the stadard flood of threads:
I'd like to speak for those of us at DU who don't approve of applauding the death of a perceived political enemy.

Nothing will keep you from it. Enjoy yourselves.

I truly hope that the "hide thread" feature is working this weekend.

1. He lived a long life, but it's hard to look at what he did and say it was worthwhile
he could have done a lot of good but went in a different direction. Yes, RIP.

2. My condolances to his family
for no matter how we feel about him, his family did care for him, and they are in suffering and pain right now.

4. It's all they have
After all, anyone who tells them that they might want to find something else to do than exult over someone else's death is told that we are "infringing on their right of free speech".

>Nothing will keep you from it. Enjoy yourselves.<

Absolutely. After all, it's yet one more chance to show they believe that manners are so 1900's, aren't they?

6. He was NOT simply a 'political enemy'...
he was an enemy of all that's right with America, all that is decent, resonable, moral, and Constitutional.

No R.I.P. from me for him.

7. After losing Carlin, I assume Helms dying is just a balancing of the Force.
That, or God gave Tim Russert a last request.

8. All people are not equal. Some deserve death and some even deserve to be mocked at their death.
I mock you, you racist piece of shit. Into the dirt, with the rest of the crap, I say.

18. We all deserve death.
We all have it coming. However, in the spirit of the thing, Jesse got to live longer than he deserved. I was always so ashamed he was my Senator. It also blew chunks he always seemed to squeak by with that extra 1-2%.

My very first vote was specifically to go vote against him. As mentioned above i felt he was such an embarrassment. What kept him in office was his ability to bring the pork home to many of us farmers.

9. It's hard not to feel relief
when so much evil passes out of this world. Helms was pure evil.

The problem with being a Buddhist, even a bad one, is admitting the distinct possibility that he'll be back--and with an even worse Karmic load.

It certainly takes all the joy out of the occasion.

13. Hell had an opening!
Jesse Helms, racist to the core, dispelled the widely-held notion that he had sold his soul to the devil and died at age 184. Across the land people will gather with friends, families, hold celebratory cookouts, hoist a brew and put up great and loud displays of fireworks to mark the occasion. Dying on the 4th of July is the one patriotic thing this monster ever did, and I plan to enjoy his effort at atoning for his miserable past by leaving this planet. What's more I plan to celebrate this annually as will the majority of Americans, I suspect. The only downside is that the noxious uber-repug anthem, "God Bless the USA" has invaded my brain-pan since I heard the glad tidings.

19. With all due respect to spirituality...
I don't believe that no matter what happens after death, that this scenario is going to unfold this way. this guy is either going to be punished for his misery-making or he's not. Either way, he is not going to 'realize' anything...it's not like the info wasn't present here, he just chose to go the other way. So there either is justice, or there isn't; if there is, then he'll pay, if there isn't, then this whole process isn't worth worrying about, is it? If there is no hereafter, then none of it matters...not one whit.

17. Jesse Helms wasn't just an enemy of Democrats....
Edited on Fri Jul-04-08 11:09 AM by FredScuttle
He was an enemy of DEMOCRACY

He was a proud enemy of equality, decency, freedom and every other value this nation professes to stand for.

Fuck his evil corpse and I hope he suffered mightily before he died.
