Former U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms, a North Carolina Republican who became an icon to conservatives, died Friday at the age of 86, a senior congressional source said.

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, announced on its Web site that he died at 1:18 a.m. Friday after having been ill in recent years.

The center's president, Ed Feulner, hailed Helms as "one of the most consequential figures of the 20th century."

"Along with Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan, he helped establish the conservative movement and became a powerful voice for free markets and free people," Feulner wrote.

"The defeat of Soviet communism and the rise of Ronald Reagan would not have happened without his intrepid leadership at decisive times."

3. Every single nice man and sweet lady, beautiful baby and loudmouth drunk DIES.
You will die, and that will be that, no heaven, no hell, no nothing.

The damage Jesse Helms did was done long ago. The cessation of his bodily functions will not undo a single one of his bad deeds.

There is nothing to celebrate. The death of that nasty old man is nothing more than an occasion to reflect on our own mortality.

7. It really has nothing to do with morals.
Celebrating the death of a withered, ancient old man whose mind probably shut down in about 1993 is the height of illogic.

I don't think what you're doing is immoral at all.

It just makes no sense. No progress has been achieved, and nobody is remotely better off because that cadaverous codger finally kicked it.

My god, the man has probably been eating baby food for years at this point.

9. It is cleansing for society.
Even if he was just a shell in his late days, he was a figure. It's good to see that figure, that shell be buried in the ground.

It opens space for better people, better shells.
