Neil Young on Impeaching Bush

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Billboard | QUESTION: A liberal friend of mine in New York saw the Twin Towers fall while stuck in traffic on the Verrazano Bridge. She was so shook up, and remained so scared that in 2004 she voted for Bush, simply out of fright.

ANSWER: Well, he used that. He played on people’s fear, instead of people’s faith and their real faith, real belief, their real human feelings. They used fear to get where they wanted to go, which is too bad. It’s just unfortunate. You know, I empathize with her for voting for Bush and being so terrified that she had to do that. I feel sorry for her. But I think a lot of people probably did that, and it’s too bad.

And he needs to be impeached for what he did. I mean, the Senate has verified it. It needs to happen for history. It’s like a dirty business. It needs to be taken care of. Nobody wants to be bothered, but it should happen, because do we want to let this go down in history? It’s a cancer. It’s a blight. It has to be eradicated. You have to look at this and go, “The president mislead the people into going to war, lost 5,000 troops, there’s hundreds of thousands of people killed in Iraq, billions and billions of dollars were taken out of the economy for the war, and now we’ve discovered for sure — the Senate committee has said, ‘Yeah, he did. He lied.’” So what do you have to do to get impeached? What do you need to do? And who are we if we don’t do it … if we don’t actually say, “Hey — the law! You can’t do that!”

We place our trust in this guy, and this is what happens. I don’t see how it plays out. We’ve been vindicated by the Senate, who spent a long time investigating it. Yet it’s on the second page of the paper. Brian Williams talks about it and goes right on to the next story, and it’s like it’s 25 seconds. Give me a break! Why fall asleep? America’s fallen asleep. America’s sleeping through a moment in history that’s going to affect us forever. It’s gonna be, we’re the country who had our Senate investigate and found out we went to war under false pretenses and we didn’t do anything. We said, “That’s okay. We’ll just let that go because we’re distracted by oil prices and a new presidential election.” So we don’t have time to take care of our dirty business. But, man, you got to take care of your house. You can’t let that go. What if we have another guy like that, who turns out to be an idiot in 15 years, and he goes, “Well, George Bush did it.” What’s the precedent?

Dennis Kucinich introduced impeachment articles today, and people think, “Ah, he’s a kook,” you know. It’s like, when are people going to wake up? We shouldn’t have big vehicles that use so much gas, but we keep making ‘em. It’s not, “Big is bad,” it’s “Gas is bad.” Why don’t we change that? There are a lot of things to do that we’re not doing that kind of bothers me.

2. K&R
The Restless Consumer, by Neil Young

The people have heard the news
The people have spoken
You may not like what they said
But they weren't jokin'

Way out on the desert sands
Lies a desperate lover
They call her the "Queen of Oil"
So much to discover

Don't need no ad machine
Telling me what I need
Don't need no Madison Avenue War
Don't need no more boxes I can see

Covered in flags but I can't see them on TV

Don't need no more lies
Don't need no more lies
Don't need no more lies
Don't need no more lies

The restless consumer flies
Around the world each day
With such an appetite for taste and grace

People from around the world
Need someone to listen
We're starving and dying from our disease
We need your medicine
How do you pay for war
And leave us dyin' ?
When you could do so much more
You're not even tryin'

Don't need no TV ad
Tellin' me how sick I am
Don't want to know how many people are like me
Don't need no dizziness
Don't need no nausea
Don't need no side effects like diarrhea or sexual death

Don't need no more lies
Don't need no more lies
Don't need no more lies
Don't need no more lies

The restless consumer lies
Asleep in her hotel
With such an appetite
For anything that sells

A hundred voices from a hundred lands
Need someone to listen
People are dying here and there
They don't see the world the way you do
There's no mission accomplished here
Just death to thousands

A hundred voices from a hundred lands
Cry out in unison

Don't need no terror squad
Don't want no damned Jihad
Blowin' themselves away in my hood
But we don't talk to them
So we don't learn from them
Hate don't negotiate with Good

Don't need no more lies
Don't need no more lies
Don't need no more lies
Don't need no more lies

The restless comsumer flies
Around the world each day
With such an appetite for efficiency
And pace...

Don't need no more lies.

9. It's more than passing strange that some of the staunchest defenders

of democracy in America are Canadian expats.

John Kenneth Galbraith, Peter Jennings, Donald
Sutherland just to name the most well known.

Donald Sutherland enjoys special mention because
he was married to Shirley Douglas the daughter of
the Tommy Douglas the father of Canadian health care
and grandfather of Keifer Sutherland.

"In 1969 Shirley Douglas was arrested for storing bombs for the underground resistance movement the Black Panthers in her home in California. Shirley had been active in organizing a breakfast program for children living in Los Angeles’ slums. No bombs were found in her home and the charges were dropped. Tommy Douglas went to Los Angeles to support his daughter. Following Shirley Douglas’ arrest, Tommy Douglas declared that he was “proud of the fact that my daughter believes, as I do, that hungry children should be fed, whether they are Black Panthers or white Republicans.”

The charges against Shirley were of course trumped up but rumor has it that Sutherland's divorce
from Shirley was the price he had to pay for remaining in the US.

So much for Republican 'family' values.

There is a video of Tommy Douglas on You tube showing up in court in LA to take his daughter back
to Canada after she was deported in a plea bargain to drop the fabricated bomb charges against her.

Edited on Sun Jun-29-08 05:19 PM by Canuckistanian
As Jack Bauer on "24", he was cited as the hero for the rationalization of torture. Including some interrogators.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24_(TV_series)
Torture: Jack and others employ the use of torture or threats of torture in nearly every situation in order to extract information. In most cases, the torture is justified as serving the greater good, although there is sometimes a conflict of interest in which torture is also motivated by revenge. CTU has also used hyoscine-pentothal, a fictional pain-inducing drug, in interrogation sessions where quick results are needed.<27>. This has been used on both agents and antagonists. Its effects are completely unlike the effects of real hyoscine and pentothal. The show has been criticized by human rights groups for its over-use of torture scenes<28> <29>; in response the show's writers have said that they will try to include less torture scenes in future episodes

in fact, I would say that he's disgraced his NDP/CCF roots by lending his name to this regression in social progress.

14. I'm aware of Keifer's ignominious portrayal of Jack Bauer although

I haven't watched 24 I get the gist from commentaries
about it.

I should point out that left wingers playing right wing
characters is not without precedent. eg Stirling Hayden who
was on the McCarthy blacklist and couldn't work until
Kubrick hired him to play Gen Jack D Ripper in Dr. Strangelove.

Mind you Keifer wasn't black listed but when the producer for
Lost Boys found out that Keifer was Tommy Douglas' grandson
he was quoted as saying, "Do you mean to tell my I've signed
a commie actor to play in my film?"

That was 1987, not so long ago in historical terms.

29. There is a great interview with
Kiefer Sutherland done by Charlie Rose in January 2007. This is just a quick bit:

" I believe inherently that - that we have a responsibility to take care of each other, so when you can talk about socialized healthcare, absolutely, that`s a no-brainer. Free universities, absolutely, that`s a no-brainer for me. So in the definition, I guess those are leaning towards socialist politics. To me it`s common sense. And I do believe the wealthy have a responsibility to the less fortunate. Some people call that communism. I disagree. Again, it`s common sense. But I would have to say that my politics would be leaning towards the left."

He's very clear where he - as opposed to his character - is on torture and a few other issues.

America IS sleeping through a moment in history.

And Bush's presidency WILL be a precendent, even in the future. Even if Obama gets in for the next 4 years.

The NEXT Republican government will be the DEATH of the American Dream.

15. Let's Impeach the President
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3_cS_iQ-w0&feature=related

Let's impeach the president for lying

And leading our country into war

Abusing all the power that we gave him

And shipping all our money out the door

He's the man who hired all the criminals

The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors

And bend the facts to fit with their new stories

Of why we have to send our men to war

Let's impeach the president for spying

On citizens inside their own homes

Breaking every law in the country

By tapping our computers and telephones

What if Al Qaeda blew up the levees

Would New Orleans have been safer that way

Sheltered by our government's protection

Or was someone just not home that day?

Let's impeach the president

For hijacking our religion and using it to get elected

Dividing our country into colors

And still leaving black people neglected

Thank god he's racking down on steroids

Since he sold his old baseball team

There's lot of people looking at big trouble

But of course the president is clean

Thank God

21. I love Neil Young
I love his music. I have a shitload of his CD's and vinyl going back decades.

But.

Like his songwriting, his politics can be just as hit-or-miss. He can be crassly opportunistic and wrongheaded. For every "Tonight's The Night" work of brilliance, there's two "Hawks and Doves" or "Trans" destined for the remainder bin.

He can empathize with the scared person, sure enough. In the wake of 9-11, he was saying we should give up some of our civil liberties for security. He wrote "Let's Roll" in a fit of pseudo-heroic posturing. I almost thought he was going to tour with Toby Keith. I thought, "Fuck him, he's a Canadian, what right does he have to tell us what to do with our civil liberties?" No wonder Ronnie Van Zant (another Neil Young fan who understood the frustrations and contradictions that come with being one) wrote "Sweet Home Alabama".

It's any way the wind blows with Neil. I cringe when I think of how he supported Reagan in the 80's. I loved how he 'redeemed' himself when he slammed Bush Sr. on his "Freedom" album. I loved "Living With War" just about as much as anyone here. I could almost kind of forgive "Are You Passionate?" as a result. Some may defend his all-over-the-map rationalizations as quirkiness or independence - I prefer to think of it as too much fucking weed and coke over the years.

I suppose, like RVZ and many others, I have to live with the fact that his songwriting genius is just as occasionally and maddeningly compromised and limited as his world view at times. I take his views on impeachment with the same molecule of sodium chloride as his boner for Reagan.

when it counted, Neil Young was 100 percent behind the

So, I'm kind of like, yeah, right.

his lyrics to "Let's Roll"

Let's roll for freedome,
Let's roll for love,
We're going after satan,
On the wings of a dove,
Let's roll for justice,
Let's roll for truth,
Let's not let our children,
Grow up fearfull in there youth.

Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.
Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.
Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.

His music is twangy, grating, & repetative! ( his dialogue isn't terribly eloquent either althugh maybe it will appeal to more that way. Can't accuse him of being elite.
To make cramming us all in to the same space so we can use public transportation, they will have to make laws against violating the auditory space of others.
My generation grew up with SILENCE, so we could THINK STRAIGHT! There is nothing more beautiful than bird song! ( Not grating twangy or repetative! It's nuanced has intervals, ) No wonder so many are ADHD IT'S THE MUSIC STUPID!

I can't get out of my local supermarket fast enough because they have the whiney throat singers cranked up.
