The Mississippi pierced a levee, at rear, east of Winfield, Mo., on Friday morning. Rescue workers quickly built a new barrier.

WINFIELD, Mo. — The Pin Oak levee, the last remaining barrier between about 100 homes here and the lakelike Mississippi River, finally gave way before dawn Friday. But the fight to save those homes continued into the evening as the authorities coordinated an effort to wall them off with a new sand-filled barricade.

The dynastic cycle... One of the things that signaled the end of a dynasty was crumbling infrastructure.

Incidentally, the same teacher who taught us that also gave us a quiz that consisted of 20 quotations. And what we had to do was write down whether each quote was from the Declaration of Independence or the Communist manifesto. But in the end, he decided not to count it for a grade. Why?

Because nobody passed!
