Pentagon: Taliban a resilient force in Afghanistan

Pentagon report says the Taliban have regrouped in Afghanistan, likely to increase attacks

The Taliban has regrouped after its initial fall from power in Afghanistan and the pace of its attacks is likely to increase this year, according to a Pentagon report that offers a dim view of progress in the nearly seven-year-old war.

Noting that insurgent violence has climbed, the report said that despite U.S. and coalition efforts to capture and kill key leaders, the Taliban is likely to "maintain or even increase the scope and pace of its terrorist attacks and bombings in 2008."

The Taliban, it said, has "coalesced into a resilient insurgency."

At the same time, the Afghan Army and national police are progressing slowly and still lack the trainers they need.

The report was released Friday along with a separate plan for the development of Afghan security forces. They are the first two comprehensive Pentagon reports to evaluate progress in Afghanistan.

4. Wait a minute...so we AREN'T winning the war on terra?
I thought the SURGE was working.

So after billions of dollars, thousands of troops lost, and more than six years of effort, the terrorists are regrouping?

Sounds like failure to me.

8. "Imperial Hubris" is a book but it also describes the
Busholini Regime.

Sen Biden has a good idea about Afghanistan but it was shot down by most Dems & Repugs.

9. It seems BBC does report this type of news across Europe
We are kept in the dark. A young student I know just got back from Euro. and while in Spain was talking to the locals and discussing the war in Afghanistan and how the Taliban was becoming a real problem. The Spanish fellow made a comment on how sad it was when they saw photos on TV of coffins coming home. He was really surprised when the Americans told them that our govt. wouldn't allow our media to show coffins!!

Sad when Europe knows more about Our Wars than we do......
