Another Country Music Star bites back at bush
Released today as a salute to the Dixie Chicks:

"On With The Song" by Mary Chapin Carpenter

1st Verse

This isn't for the ones who blindly follow
Jingoistic bumper stickers tellin' you
To love it or leave it and you'd better love Jesus
And get out of the way of the Red, White, and Blue

2nd Verse

This isn't for the ones who buy their six-packs
At the 7-Eleven where the clerk makes change
Whose accent makes clear (he) sure ain't from here
They call him a camel jockey instead of his name

Chorus

No, this is for the ones who stand their ground
When the lines in the sand get deeper
When the whole world seems to be upside down
And (the) shots bein' taken get cheaper, cheaper

3rd Verse

This isn't for the ones who would gladly swallow
Everything their leader would have them know
Bowing and kissin' while the truth goes missin'
"Bring it on," he crows, puttin' on his big show

4th Verse

This isn't for the man who can't count the bodies
Can't comfort the families, can't say when he's wrong
Playin' "I'm the decider," like some sort of Messiah
While another day passes and a hundred souls gone

(Repeat Chorus)

Bridge

This is for the ones that I see above me
Three little stars in a great big sky
Light for the world and hope for the weary
They try

5th Verse

This isn't for the ones with their radio signal
Callin' for bonfires and boycotts, they rave
Exhorting their listeners to spit on the sinners
While countin' the bucks of advertising, they'll say

Tag

This isn't for you and you know who you are
Just do what you want 'cause I know that you can
But I gotta be true to myself and to you
So on with the song, I don't give a damn

47. She is a little more folk rock (?) to me than country
Edited on Wed Mar-07-07 11:20 AM by rebel with a cause
although I know she is in the country category. She has stood up before for things she believed in and I wish she had came out earlier on this one, but better late than never I guess. I also like her, but not enough to turn on country music again. There will have to be a lot of them standing up, and some of them leaving, to get me to even think about doing that.

12. Harry Chapin
>>>snip
n the mid 1970s, Chapin focused on his social activism, including raising money to combat hunger in the United States and co-founding the organization World Hunger Year with legendary radio DJ Bill Ayres, before returning to music with On the Road to Kingdom Come. He also released a book of poetry, Looking...Seeing, in 1977. Many of Chapin's concerts were benefit performances (for example, a concert<1> to help save the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse, New York), and sales of his concert merchandise were used to support World Hunger Year.

Chapin's social causes at times caused friction among his band members and manager Fred Kewley. Chapin donated an estimated third of his paid concerts to charitable causes, often performing alone with his guitar to reduce costs.

14. Wonderful man. No relation to Mary-Chapin Carpenter that I know of.
"Carpenter was born and raised in Princeton, NJ, the daughter of a Life magazine executive; she spent two years of her childhood in Japan, where her father was launching the Asian edition of Life."

http://www.starpulse.com/Music/Carpenter,_Mary_Chapin/Biography/

Notice the correct spelling of her name. First name is Mary-Chapin. Last name, Carpenter.

62. Jen Chapin not only performs
She's GREAT!!!

We provided a venue for her here in California about 4 or 5 years ago. She showed up with an upright acoustic bass player -- that's it - no guitar, no piano, just acoustic bass and her voice and personality and she tore the house up!!!

If you get a chance to see her -- DO IT!!!

17. Harry Chapin's family
Chapin was married to Sandy Chapin, a New York socialite eight years his senior. The story of their meeting and romance is told in his song "I Wanna Learn a Love Song". He fathered two children with her, Jennifer and Joshua, and was stepfather to her three children by a previous marriage.

31. Many of them are Dems, even liberal.
Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are somewhat outspoken Democrats. Merle Haggard has endorsed Hillary, and is a big opponent of Bush and the Iraq invasion. Willie Nelson is liberal. Even Toby Keith is a Democrat, though not a liberal Democrat. He campaigned for Bill Richardson (close friend of his) and the governor of Oklahoma.

Other Dems in country music: Nanci Griffith, Hal Ketchum, Emmylou Harris, Pam Tillis, Trisha Yearwood (it's rumored Garth is, too), Tish Hinojosa. Notice the more talented ones, in general, tend to be more liberal.

A lot of Country singers are quiet about their politics because their fan base is at odds with them, so they don't want to inflame their audience.

We're getting creamed by country music stars, and Neil Young in the protest song department. Bright Eyes got the ball rolling nicely with "When the President Talks to God", and TV on the Radio has "Dry Drunk Emporer", but we should be swimming in protest music right about now.

Okay, I am 61 years old, but I have always kept current with music trends. I grew up in a home with all types of music played, and I have continued to appreciate music from many different avenues through out my life. There are some that I just can't get into, but on the whole, there are parts of all music types that I like. American Idiot was a masterpiece as far as I'm concerned.

that I don't particularly like, hence I can't think of their name, that has a video out showing the power of protesting in the past and encouraging it. This same group had a video out before that I think was more to the right, but.........maybe I was wrong, or maybe they have just came around with a lot of other people.

I love it! But I bet it won't get played on country radio. And they are the ones who most need to hear it. But here kind of music (literate, intelligent music, country or otherwise) does not get played on mainstream radio anymore. Hopefully plenty of airplay on Sirius and XM.

For many years, she has been my favorite songwriter. I can't explain it exactly but I think her songs express just exactly what I wish I could say. It just hits me where I live unlike most everything else out there.

54. Chapin was a friend of mine when she went to Brown University
and she had strong leanings to the left even back then.

Her family lived in a huge house in Georgetown and she went by the name Chapin. When daddy called in a favor to get her in with one of country music's biggest producers the guy signed her, but advised her to avoid mentioning her privileged background and start using Mary Chapin as her stage name.

I remember watching her do bad covers (her voice was already great but she was strictly a 3 chord strummer)of Joni Mitchell songs at the Grad Center Bar at Brown to an audience of about 20 people when I first met her. Another friend (Paul Mellyn) was the one who encouraged her to start writing country stuff and taught her country and bluegrass picking.

Glad to see she's gone so far.

;) Though the southern thing is out, the country line up might be nice?

We have The Dixies, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Trisa Yearwood, etc. All Democrats from what I gather.

Thanks for the heads up, I may have to buy my second country album! ;) Not counting my Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline collection of course.
