Pelosi Supports 'Fairness Doctrine'
<http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=27185>

The speaker of the House made it clear to me and more than forty of my colleagues yesterday that a bill by Rep. Mike Pence (R.-Ind.) to outlaw the “Fairness Doctrine” (which a liberal administration could use to silence Rush Limbaugh, other radio talk show hosts and much of the new alternative media) would not see the light of day in Congress during ’08. In ruling out a vote on Pence’s proposed Broadcaster's Freedom Act, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D.-CA.) also signaled her strong support for revival of the “Fairness Doctrine” -- which would require radio station owners to provide equal time to radio commentary when it is requested.

Experts say that the “Fairness Doctrine,” which was ended under the Reagan Administration, would put a major burden on small radio stations in providing equal time to Rush Limbaugh and other conservative broadcasters, who are a potent political force. Rather than engage in the costly practice of providing that time, the experts conclude, many stations would simply not carry Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and other talk show hosts who are likely to generate demands for equal time.

3. two problems with the Fairness Doctrine
1) Would most assuredly meet with a Supreme Court worthy challenge to free speech and with the bench occupied the way it is...I would imagine the FD would be struck down.
2) Can you imagine a show like Hannity's America following immediately after Bill Moyers? It would become a reality if the FD was upheld...

AND

Who decides liberal/conservative time and what constitutes what? Some people actually same MSNBC is a liberal news network...

11. It's not a matter of "liberal" and "conservative"
It's about giving equal time to opposing viewpoints, which is easy to measure.

6. Oh sure, she won't bring this bill to the floor, but allows FISA spying/immunity
to go through on greased wheels.

The Pence's bill is just a publicity stunt thought up by O'Reilly. It is not even a threat. A joke bill.

But on FISA spying, Pelosi twisted arms to get votes for it.

12. She is a corporatist
She was a big part of the leadership in the gentrification of some of SanFran's less affluent neighborhoods chasing out all but the most wealthy.

Pelosi a Liberal, Bah Humbug.

9. she couldn't have kept the fisa bill from being considered
If she had blocked the FISA bill, the repubs, joined by sufficient numbers of Blue Dogs, could've forced a vote on it through a discharge petition, for which they clearly had enough support.

In fact, that's a risk on the Fairness Doctrine bill -- so far no Democrats have signed Rep. Pence's discharge petition. It has been signed by virtually every repub, meaning that if around 18-20 Blue Dogs (or non Blue Dogs who think that the FD is unconsitutional) signed the discharge petition, the bill would move to the floor no matter what Pelosi wanted.
