Mugabe, a Catholic and in power since independence from Britain in 1980, said last week that "only God" could remove him from office.

"Only God who appointed me will remove me - not the MDC, not the British," he said

Sounds like some of his wild delusions...

Pope declines to meet Mugabe

Pope Benedict XVI declined to meet President Robert Mugabe when he visited Rome this week.

Vatican spokesman Fr Federico Lombardi said “no audience is planned” between the Holy Father and the Zimbabwean leader. He said such a meeting had never been confirmed.

The meeting was requested by Minister of Environment and Tourism,Francis Nhema through the Zimbabwean Embassy in Italy on Via Virgilio, 8-int. 8,Roma.

Last year Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference circulated a Pastoral Letter titled ‘God Hears The Cry Of The Oppressed’ to its Parishes and also copied to the Vactican. The letter blasted the ZANU PF government for oppression and stifling dissent.

8. and what about Mandela?
http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/06/mugabe-mandela-the-pope-and-bi.php

I guess Hitchens asked this question two weeks ago on Slate.com.

The Vatican might worry that attacking Mugabe would backlash against the local churches, but Mandela should be able to speak with impunity.

And the Archbishop of Harare has spoken out too: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0MKY/is_14_28/ai_n6245069
