Trevor Paglen is a geometer and a photography who has used astronomical photography to catch glimpses of the Pentagon's secret activities, black sites, and extraordinary renditions. Here are some preliminary images of what our tax dollars pay for.

Paglen's work has been covered in the NYT, ArtForum, and even on the Colbert Report. His doctoral research was in this area.

5. Clarifications:

Top picture is Area 51. You can see it real well in Google Earth.

The red and white 737 is a "Janet Flight" out of Las Vegas. It is one of the planes used to ferry workers to and from Area 51. Whether they have used the Janet's for renditions, I do not know.

The large wasteland is Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah. You do not want to go hiking there.

Bottom two are secret jails in Afghanistan.

Guess it's a well known imagine I didn't pick up on.

The wasteland is Dugway, per his website.

And as the poster above said, it is Janet. I was confusing the photos with his site Terminal Air which tracks Gitmo and other flights.

The plane is actually a "Janet", one of the 737's used to ferry workers from Las Vegas to Area 51.

The caption on the picture at his site reads:
Unmarked 737 at "Gold Coast" Terminal
Las Vegas, NV
Distance ~ 1 mile
10:44 p.m.

I was all over his site this weekend after another DUer posted something about it.

The "Janets" have been an internet fav for several years. They are almost certainly NOT used for extraordinary rendition.

15. I found a secret detention facility in Northern Virginia

In Alexandria, outside of D.C. Department of Homeland Security. On the gounds of the Coast Guards Telecommunications Command on Telegraph Rd. The sat photo shows it as a building surrounded by an octagonal shaped double razor wire fence. There are camera posts at every angle of the octagon. There are also cameras on every corner of the building. There are three separate open air areas within the building, one has tables and chairs and is obviously for taking meals. The other two are partitioned off into three chambers and four chambers, look closely and you can see cameras in the corners to monitor these open air partitions, one for each chamber. These, I believe are for prisoners to get some "outdoor time". The rectangular part of the building to the upper left has ventilitaion ducts which would suggest it is used for food service. I have searched and searched to find some reference to this facility somewhere on the internet, there is none. It was also recently built. Any input is greatly appreciated.

17. If it's sitting on Telegraph Road

it's not very secret.

I seriously doubt that's a detention facility as there are no guard towers and the entrance is nothing more than an un-guarded pair of chain link fences (one of which is open). Much more likely that this is an intelligence facility or some other type of classified work is going on here and that the double fence (which you'll see at every secure intelligence facility in the country just about) is designed to keep people out rather than keep people in.

18. Not true

It's actually back in a swamp away from everything. And actually most of the CIA, NRO, NGIA and DIA sites in NoVa only have a fence around them with a few cameras and a checkpoint. Hell The DIA has a building directly over top of the Clarendon Metro station. that is a detention facility no doubt in my mind.
