GM stalls plans for future big trucks, SUVs
Pretty soon they won't be making these hideous monstrosities. I have so looked forward to that day. I just wish this headline had read: GM Stops Production of SUVS

GM stalls plans for future big trucks, SUVs

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- General Motors Corp. said Thursday it will divert more of its capital away from its flagging line of big trucks and sports utilities and toward smaller cars as consumers downsize in the face of record-high gas prices.

"We knew the truck market was shrinking, but there have been some significant and rapid changes in North America," GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson said. "We're on a very aggressive program, and the next logical step is to resize the resources."

Now, instead of focusing on the rollout of the next generation of the full-size truck program, GM will extend the life cycle of its current lineup "until we get a better idea as to where we're going," he explained.

GM's previous step in more aligning production with demand came earlier this month when the company set plans to close four truck plants. GM is reportedly considering cutting down its brand lineup, which includes Cadillac, Saab, Chevrolet, GMC, Hummer, Saturn, Buick and Pontiac.

It may be too little, too late. GM has serious catching up to do.

5. Series electric has been giving locomotives 400mpg pulling a ton of freight since the 40s. There's..
...no reason why GM couldn't have figured out something by now.

6. GM will extend the life cycle of its current lineup ...
"until we get a better idea as to where we're going,"

They're going down the tubes is where they're going. If they want to save their truck business they better come up with plug-in hybrid trucks and vans in a hurry.
