2. 47th Vice President.
Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 01:44 AM by ih8thegop
Because some presidents had more than one VP (i.e. FDR and Nixon), and because some had zero (i.e. John Tyler), the number of Vice Presidents does not equal the number of Presidents.

Here's a list of Vice Presidents. you can see that Dick is #46.

9. Oh, NP.
Plenty have brought him up here on DU. In fact, I'd wager he's the fan favorite here, minus Al Gore. I'm just waiting for the people on TV to mention him... but I guess that'd just throw a wrench in the Hilary-Obama storyline they've been crafting.

... and I don't care how politically incorrect it may be.

But Wes Clark is one of the best-looking men who ever lived.

The fact that he's intelligent, witty, and exudes common sense is all to the good, too ... but he's one DAMNED FINE looking gentleman.

... I've suggested Wes Clark to some of my friends when we've had discussions about potential Democratic candidates in '08 and many of them are put off by the fact that he's a "military man." It's amazing how their looks change when I mention he's also a Rhodes scholar. :)

10. That works for me very well!
I'm same race as Obama, and Internationally inclined due to my birthplace....and feel like this is a time for experts in these matters!

First Democratic First Star General and First Black Vice President who will learn about foreign policy from the best-

Rhodes Scholar meet Harvard!

And when one looks at one Clark said back in 2002, he had the foresight years long! He knew what would happen....and I'd say, that's priceless!

"The war is unpredictable and could be difficult and costly. And what is at risk in the aftermath is an open-ended American ground commitment in Iraq and an even deeper sense of humiliation in the Arab world, which could intensify our problems in the region and elsewhere.

we're going to have chaos in that region....; in fact, what may happen is that we'll remove a repressive regime and have it replaced with a fundamentalist regime which contributes to the strategic problem rather than helping to solve it.

Then we're dealing with the longer mid term, the mid term problems. Will Iraq be able to establish a government that holds it together or will it fragment? There are strong factionary forces at work in Iraq and they will continue to be exacerbated by regional tensions in the area. The Shia in the south will be pulled by the Iranians.
The Kurds want their own organization. The Kurds will be hemmed in by the Turks. The Iraqis also, the Iranians also are nervous of the Kurds. But nevertheless, the Kurds have a certain mass and momentum that they've built up. They will have to work to establish their participation in the government or their own identity."

We've encouraged Saddam Hussein and supported him as he attacked against Iran in an effort to prevent Iranian destabilization of the Gulf. That came back and bit us when Saddam Hussein then moved against Kuwait. We encouraged the Saudis and the Pakistanis to work with the Afghans and build an army of God, the mujahaddin, to oppose the Soviets in Afghanistan. Now we have released tens of thousands of these Holy warriors, some of whom have turned against us and formed Al Qaida.
My French friends constantly remind me that these are problems that we had a hand in creating. So when it comes to creating another strategy, which is built around the intrusion into the region by U.S. forces, all the warning signs should be flashing. There are unintended consequences when force is used. Use it as a last resort. Use it multilaterally if you can. Use it unilaterally only if you must."

and I still think he looks better with a mustache! I tried the full beard on him, but that wasn't so flattering. I think the look suits him, tho I'll agree we haven't had a 'POTUStache' since Taft, if memory serves.

Though if you want to be technical.. our elected 43rd President had a full beard in 2004

I personally don't have anything against the beard. But seriously, in politics, beard = you are not a factor. When I saw Gore sporting one, that's when I knew he just didn't give a shit any more and truly had no more political ambitions. Of course now that he's clean-shaven again, there's the possibility that he may jump in the race. Like most folks, I wouldn't mind supporting the "new" version of Al Gore.

28. Here's a CNN bit w. video from a few years back on the no-no regarding POTUS beards
http://archives.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/02/13/beards.presidency/

I don't think this is as much a factor outside the POTUS or with regards to mustaches.

Here are two recent examples of political mustaches & beards. They do seem rare, however!

33. Gore's personality changes when he sports a beard too.
Even his personality is more relaxed and accessible. One of the things in 2000 was the complaint amongst voters that Gore came across as stiff or conceited - generally inaccessible - in spite of the fact he is known to be charming and very open in person. Once he disappeared for awhile and grew the beard his personality became much more open "on camera".
