Woman brands thoughtless date with hot iron
"NEW YORK (AP) -- A college student who branded a date's body with a scalding piece of metal as payback for never calling her after they had sex was sentenced to five years in prison Friday.

Kristina Caban, 23, had no comment as state Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus sentenced her for what he called a crime that was "not remotely justifiable."

Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg told Obus that Caban was the "mastermind behind the plan" to sear the torso of Samir "Sammy" Sara, then 23, for having sex with her once in 2004 and never calling her again.

Caban enlisted new boyfriend Robert Testagrossa to help brand a four-inch-high "R" on Samir's abdomen in October 2006, the prosecutor said. She said Caban lured the former lover to a hotel room, where Testagrossa and another man grabbed him."

I'm glad I'm not dating anymore.

2. these things are horrifically sad. My sister-in-law went to school with a woman
who rebuffed a one time date and eventual stalker and he ended up throwing acid into her face, disfiguring her for life.

I never understand why people can't just move on.

3. Stupid people do stupid things.
Let's premedidate an assault, hold the guy captive, taser him, kick him, then burn him with an "R" shaped branding iron, so to speak. Yeah, we'll get away with it. We can believe that because we're morons.

18. And you have a problem with this?
Why? It seems like a perfectly reasonable solution to handle a callous date.

4. She got five years? George Bush never even got arrested.
Let's travel back in time to 1967, via 1999:

Presidential candidate George W. Bush once led a Yale fraternity that barbarically branded its new members on their backsides with a red-hot metal rod as part of a sadistic hazing practice.

“I got branded and I didn’t like it one bit,” Professor Bradford Lee of the elite Naval War College in Newport, R.I.-an ex-football player and onetime member of Bush’s Delta Epsilon Kappa fraternity-told STAR in an exclusive interview. “It did burn,” he says, recalling the terrifying experience. “I think I still have the mark on me.”

Amazingly, Bush, now the governor of Texas, defended the illegal torture of the young fraternity pledges at the time as a harmless prank-insisting that it was comparable to “only a cigarette burn” which left “no scarring mark physically or mentally.”

But others said the branding resulted in a second-degree burn that left a half-inch scab in the shape of the Greek letter Delta.

34. Not defending Bush
Because I think that kind of frat hazing should be banned, but it's a big difference between signing up for a fraternity in college where most guys probably know there is some sort of hazing like branding or similar - the frat inductee could back out and not join the frat - and been branded involuntarily, like in this case.

13. "Rapist" actually.
http://www.digitalalchemy.tv/2008/06/kristina-caban-branding-photos.html

On October 22, 2006, Kristina Caban lured Sara to the Chelsea Inn hotel in New York where he was Tasered, tied up, and then branded on the stomach with a hot wire brand. Although she had intended to complete the word "RAPIST" on his body, Caban and her accomplices ran off after Sara screamed.

36. Well, the best way to avoid this is to not give it up on
the first date or two.

Personally, I've NEVER had this happen to me. If you're just a little coy (and not necessarily prudish), you can have men eating out of your hand. They WANT to call you, if nothing more than the thrill of the chase.

Trust me. My husband's a "victim" of my wiles. :) That's why he's A.) My husband and B.) VERY satisfied. }(

10. Around 15-20 years ago
Here in Connecticut, a suburban teenager (Karin Aparo) from the upscale Hartford suburb of Glastonbury (hometown of Laura Ingraham and also Oprah's buddy Gayle King) traded sexual favors with her "boyfriend" in order to get him to kill her parents.

The B/F went to jail, but she did not.

That is true. Heck, I was often that way with my ex-wife...

However, plenty of women have done dumb things over men over the years as well.

17. Yeah, but clever women can get whatever they want
from a man (obviously if he's attracted to her). We have all played that game at one time or another.

Also, see how many public men get caught cheating. Compare that with how many women are found out. We are more slick....

:P

And, I doubt many women over the years have been driven to murder their boyfriend's parents because her boyfriend was good in the sack.

I don't think I would have murdered for my ex-wife, but I do remember it being hard to say "no" when she was spending us into near oblivion and also f-ing my brains out...

When men think with their little heads, it stops all oxygen from going to their large head. Women have known this since Eve and we have always used it to our advantage.

31. Yes
I've certainly been known to stop thinking around women at times... heck, at the time 9-10 years back, I was happy when my ex said I was lucky that she didn't max out *all* the credit cards before filing for divorce. Looking back, it seems odd to think we both thought I was lucky that she took *some* mercy on my credit cards... of course, I had to take out a 2nd mortgage just to support her spending, and I never ever carried a balance on my credit cards before meeting her.

16. This might explain a bit
They thought they were special? From the end of the article linked above. It amazes me how often people who we'd think should know better assume they can get away with things anyway.

Caban's father, Rafael Caban, 55, is a retired Correction Department captain.

Testagrossa is the son of two prosecutors. His father Charles is the executive assistant district attorney in Queens who prosecuted the Sean Bell police shooting case. His mother is a lawyer in the Nassau County district attorney's office.

32. but ... but ... but ... "victims" never lie!!
Perhaps this will dispense with the belief that those who report rape or pursue aggressively sexual assault charges against a man always do so because such a crime was actually committed. Some are compelled by petty, uncontrolled spite from a woman scorned.

Caban allegedly told cops that the couple's long-ago sex encounter was forced - leading cops to initially think the "R" was for rape, a law enforcement source said.

After questioning, however, she backed off that excuse for the sinister searing, and finally conceded that she was angry that Sara had ended things between them, the source said.

"They had sex several years ago and she was angry because he didn't contact her," the source said.
