George W. Bush has ended racism in America (Iowa floods)
Before the presidency of George W. Bush, many African Americans -- in fact, most Black Americans -- believed that they individually or their communities were treated as "second class citizens." We often felt that various levels of government prioritized the use of resources for white communities when their needs were in competition with the needs of our communities.

Sometimes we used a bitter expression -- "treated like a ni**er" -- to describe how we felt we had been treated.

We believed, for example, that the extreme callouse disregard that the Bush administration showed toward the people of New Orleans during Katrina was an example of that, because New Orleans was a majority Black and relatively poor city.

Today, the midwest is drowning, and the Bush administration doesn't seem to care to even pretend to be seen to be responding to this emergency, which during any other administration would be treated as an emergency for the federal government to respond to.

The Bush administration has shown that it does not just have contempt for African Americans. It has contempt for virtually the entire American population, and the population seems to be understanding that.

The same could be said for how Bush treats the troops. Bush said once he and Laura are having the "time of their lives," without seeming to comprehend that it is inappopriate to say such a thing at a time that 4,000 American troops have died and scores of thousands have been wounded.

Bush has skimped and penny pinched on the care of veterans, including grievously wounded ones. Be clear: This is not about the money it costs to take care of veterans (trivial compared to the cost of the war or the latest weapons systems); it's about demonstrating contempt, pure and simple, for the common man or woman soldier, sailor, airman or marine.

America, you are all treated like ni**gers now.

Thanks to Bush.

Today, there is no point in any white person feeling racist or feeling superior to African Americans, Mexicans or other Latinos, Native Americans, Asians or immigrants.

In all being ni**ers to Bush and his corporate overlords, perhaps we will find solidarity. Perhaps that's why it's likely we will elect a Black president.

In that way, George Bush has ended racism in America.

I say he'll carry the state.

Any bets?

20. Why, just because he put his own muscles where his mouth is? Just because he
gave a damn enough to come and personally help fill sandbags with other rescuers and salvage ops people there on the scene? Just because he got involved, bodily, rather than give some pious-sounding speech somewhere and offer a prayer? He was probably praying every moment under his breath for these people, while he was out there working. Because he didn't fly over in some big, luxurious jet plane so he could survey the damage from on high (and get his picture taken, showing "deep concern")? Just because he interrupted his campaign plans to go there and try to offer assistance? I'm sure the campaign was important, though. As important as having tea with the Queen (oh, we CAN'T cancel THAT, even while all those people are suffering and literally up shit creek)? Let's see, mcsame keeps his distance and his hands clean and offers a prayer, and bush continues his overseas joyride on the taxpayers' nickel while their citizens are suffering and drowning, and Obama gets his ass over there and pitches in with the sandbagging efforts. Gee - which of these cares more, wants to jump in with rolled-up sleeves, and which has "other priorities"?

Gee, can't figure that one out...

BTW - GREAT point in the OP! GREAT point! I hope the Iowans and others in that area remember. Memories can be awfully short when stacked up against a colossal propaganda juggernaut.

3. "The midwest is drowning"--that is hyperbole, right?
Out of the millions of people here in the midwest, what % are impacted by the flooding? I don't think the midwest is drowning. Certainly thousands have been impacted by the destruction of the flooding, but here in Wisconsin I don't believe anybody drowned and I don't think there were lives lost. Neither have I heard people lamenting that Bush and company are not here shedding crocodile tears. Oh, and FEMA has been here in Wisconsin already and our governor is satisfied with their action. Who needs them personally?

18. Most of Wisconsin Dells is actually still in good shape and most tourism sites are still open.
It was Lake Delton where the problem was when the artificially created lake carved through a natural dike, over and through a highway, emptying back into the river. The dam on the lake actually held which created more pressure near where the lake emptied over the highway. Lake Delton has a number of resorts and is the home of the well-known Tommy Bartlett water show which is over for this year (no lake). There was good fishing there, too, but the fish all went with the water.

5. There's a flood in Iowa?
:sarcasm:

It's no Katrina but it should deserve a bit more attention from President Dimwit.

8. Hey forget about Dimwit, where is FREAKIN FEMA!!!!
They send in a carload of national guardsmen without proper supplies while the buffoon is in Europe sizing up Sarkozy's lady. Is Laura bush a damn drunk also? She must be because any half-wit would have sense enough to tell the clueless wonder that it was time to go home to take care of some business. They don't seem to care that the midwest--Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri is under water and that FEMA is derelict once more. I shudder to think what their response would be if we were bombed by China! They'd probably go on cruise.

21. Welcome to DU!
You don't understand. This is probably the last time george and laura can justify such glamorous globetrotting with all the trimmings and perks and that HUGE entourage that's ALL COMPLETELY PAID FOR BY U.S. TAXPAYERS!!! It's the last time they'll be able to freeload like that, at that level of luxury and sycophancy. He's already said they're having the time of their lives. Might as well live it up while you still can, 'eh? Especially if somebody else is picking up the tab. After next January, they won't be able to travel at this level of sumptuous elitism - without having to hustle for it among their waning number of high-rolling "bush Pioneer" underwriters.

Besides, by then, they may not be able to travel much overseas - AT ALL. There may well be war crimes warrants out for them, and countries on whose soil they don't dare risk setting foot, lest they face immediate arrest.

19. I know, and the Katrina comparisons will be made for this and every major flood in the next decade.
I'm waiting to hear the right wing blowhards point to Iowans as exemplars of self-help unlike "those people" in NOLA. The lack of attention by Bush and McCain is typical of the Grand Old Personal responsibility ninnies. I'm waiting for one of them to call it a state obligation rather than a federal one.
