Catholic Group Sues to Delay California Same Sex Marriages
from AlterNet's PEEK:

Catholic Group Sues to Delay California Same Sex Marriages

Posted by Alex Blaze, The Bilerico Project at 1:27 PM on June 13, 2008.

Virginia-based Liberty Counsel is making a last ditch effort to stop same sex marriages in Caliornia.

The Liberty Counsel is suing to have same-sex marriages in California delayed:

The Virginia-based Liberty Counsel, in a petition with the 1st District Court of Appeal in San Francisco, argued that the wording of the California Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriages allows the lower court to set the terms and schedule for implementing the decision.

Liberty Counsel argued that the high court's May 15 ruling put dozens of state laws addressing marriage into conflict and that the Legislature needs time to address those issues.

They don't care about putting it off. That's not the end game here.

What they do care about is the long-term in California, and they know that the more same-sex marriages that happen there before November, the more people are going to realize that their "sky is falling" message doesn't hold water. It's what happened, massively, in Massachusetts.

Oh, and when they start complaining about the out-of-state money and volunteers going into California, lets remember that this lawsuit is being argued by a Virginia-based fundie group and that a third of their money so far has come from non-Californians, with a quarter million coming from an international Catholic organization.

This is what being dragged kicking and screaming looks like. But they're still being dragged.

1. I wonder what their standing is . . .
That is, how does the enactment of a California state law affect these folks in Virginia? Seems a simple motion to dismiss can show the petitioners the doorway out of the courthouse.

2. They are horrified by the possibility that someone, somewhere...even 2500 miles away
might actually be happy.

I can't explain it, I just notice it.

4. Speaking of out of state nuisances, have you seen this?

Many large donors to the anti-gay marriage proposition are from out of state.

5. it was similar in MA
The anti-marriage side had to bus people in from Mississippi and so on for their rallies.

6. They are all for states' rights until something is happening that they don't like in another state.
Well, the lost MA, and hopefully left some tourist dollars. :)

9. It's not just SOMEbody trying to make Catholics looks bad
No one would ever say that all Catholics are bad. Like any other community, one or a handful of members will never represent the opinions of any collective group.

But when you have an institutionalized attitude drenched in homophobia and anti-gay sentiment, such as the hierarchy of the Catholic Church, and there hasn't been notable challenges by their parishioners to change these attitudes, like there have been in other Christian denominations, it just makes Catholics look pretty lazy.

I don't make enough money to have much influence.

It still lies with money.

14. In an attempt to do what, specifically?
Keep to the "truth"? Or distract from the larger truth while attempting to nit-pick the smaller truth?

17. Uh, if you think I'm defending any church about much of anything, you're barking up the wrong tree.
I'm pointing out an obvious factual error because it's an extremely obvious factual error, as I'm kinda hung up on that truth and accuracy thing. Anybody with the slightest familiarity with either Catholics or Evangelicals, let alone their uneasy relations, would notice the problem immediately.
