Freeper neighbor lady informed me yesterday all the recent rains here proves global warming is bunk
I said no one predicted less rain around here. They have predicted "changing" weather patters which could mean more or less rain in certain areas. She said, oh no this area was supposed to get less rain because of the phony global warming.

I said OK and gave up.

This is the kind of fox news mentality we are up against.

2. They're worse than the people who used to believe the world was flat
The "flat worlders" actually had scientists (as they existed then) on their side. Now, people get a few sound bites telling them global warming isn't real and they latch on to it, because Rush told them so. As I typically ask the "unbelievers" - are you willing to debate the world's leading climate scientists on global warming? No? Then stfu!

4. Warmer climate leads to greater volatility
Higher peaks and lower valleys. More floods and more droughts. It's measurable.

6. Believe me I didn't go looking for her
My wife and I were out redoing some flowers in our yard and she walked up on us to chat.

I could have done without her real easy.

8. That happened to me with my in laws
On Easter, 5 minutes after we walked in, they started to go off on Obama saying that if he wins, Al,Louis, and Jesse will take over (thank god they don't vote). They have a right to their opinions but that doesn't they are right or that I have to hear it.

9. If they would take the time to even watch one of those weather specials on The Weather Channel.....
Edited on Fri Jun-13-08 08:47 AM by marmar
.... they'd understand that climate change can mean more rain for some places, less for others......Talking to the cave-dwellers on the right can be an exercise in absolute frustration.

10. I don't know where you are or how old this person is
but I have seen huge (hugh!!!11!) weather changes here in Mo. in my life time. I jokingly tell my kids the gov't must be in charge of the weather because no one else could make it as screwy as it has been.
People are too hooked up to their tv's and they aren't really noticing what is going on out the window, or that it is different than it use to be.
Sometimes I like talking with people like this, it helps me remember my manners. It can also be nice to get to know neighbors who you may not see eye to eye with, and then find some common ground.

11. It's not just Faux News. All of the righty-radio talkers bash warming at every opportunity
The fact that McSame will even consider climate change reform is one reason that he's not too well liked.

I'm gonna go out on a limb:

a) Your neighbor thinks Obama is a Muslim.

b) Your neighbor will say Obama speaks the language of totalitarianism, and is looking to destroy America if (God forbid) he's elected.

c) Your neighbor thinks we'd have no problem lowering taxes and paying for the war if we'd just end those giveaway programs to illegal immigrants.

d) Your neighbor thinks George W solved the health care crisis by instituting HSA's. If you're too dumb to take advantage of them, it's your problem.

19. You forgot that all those medical malpractice suits are ruining everything
Thats one of their favorites. I usually ask them how many people do they know who have cashed in on a medial malpractice suit? The answer is always none.

Then explain that the warming is going to change the climate around the world and know one is sure what areas will become rain forest and which will become deserts.

17. Local climate change:
We had an unusually mild fall, and a long, cold, dry winter.

So long that we were still having regular frosts each night, and some snow flurries, until we had a sudden heat wave, and I do mean heat wave, for 5 days in May. Highs in the 90s each day. That disappeared, we went back to cold and cloudy, with temps in the 30s at night and a few frosts. It's supposed to warm back up and hit the 80s starting today. I'm wondering if we'll get 3 days of spring, and then the summer heat will drop on us like a ton of bricks.

It's June, and I actually wore a heavy winter coat and gloves to work one day this week.

18. Her denial is her protection from the truth that she fears.
To admit would mean she would have to look at ways to change habits which would require thought. Thought is beyond the ability of the denial crowd. Easier just to call it "phony global warming" and turn on the hummer to warm it up for that 2 block drive.

20. She's right. It's a sign of "Global Wetting"
totally different thing.

"Global Warming" is not a belief system. It's just a fact. Retreating glaciers, disappearing icecaps, it's indisputable.

The cause is debatable to some degree, how much we contribute vs how much is just natural cycles. Also debatable is our ability to reverse or slow the trend. These are debates that need to happen, if only to increase awareness.

RWers will resist any restrictions on emissions, etc. Every step will be a struggle.
