Look at those who knowingly with complete foreknowledge marry into crime families; Who enter into relationships with known abusers; Who look the other way, or even physically pin their own child down, as their partner rapes them.

Strange or as distasteful as it may seem, it is survival behaviour. Or perhaps it is better characterised as a pathological outgrowth of survival behaviour. Without a massive societal support network, a woman alone has a very small chance of successfully producing offspring that will survive to an age where they themselves can breed.

Ignoring the fripperies of civilisation and simplifying enormously, men choose their breeding partners based on health and thus ability to produce viable offspring and youth, for maximum return on investment. Women choose based upon ability to protect and provide for.

And for most of history and prehistory, visible, raw naked power is the most reliable indicator of the suitability of any given man.
