Human-chimp hybrid--could this really happen?

I mean, aside from ethical considerations, would that even work?

"...I think they did make a Human-Chimp hybrid once (or tried). I heard that in some lab in China, they impregnated a female chimp with human sperm or something, and she was three months pregnant before people found out, and broke into the lab in a riot, killing her. :/ I guess that gives you some answers for your poll right there...

However, I'm sure it's possible. The difference between the DNA of Humans and Chimps is about the same as the difference between horses and donkeys, which can breed. As for what rights a hybrid would have, I'm not even going to guess. :/"

4. Dangerous idea
They bred one about 60 years ago, and turned it lose in the White House 7 years ago. Destroyed a country.

17. Dunno if it has been done....
but I think it will be done. Lots of work being done in the field of cloning, etc.

Brings up interesting dilemmas about rights and the concept of humanity, doesn't it?

Dangerous or repetitive jobs... space travel...

Hey... I can remember the first "test tube baby".

That's the serious answer.

On the other hand, I could finally find somebody (something) to fit into the small spaces in the engine compartment of my boat, and strong enough to work once he (it) gets there.

7. Here's a serious response:
It's probably completely impossible, despite claims that it's happened.

12. I think no -- different number of chromosomes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromosome

If there were offspring, I would expect it to have major deformities. I could be wrong; this isn't my field.

21. No, that wouldn't be an issue
the Grevy's zebra has 46 chromosomes, the Mountain zebras has 32, while the plains have 44. Horses have 22 chromosomes. A Mule has 32.

If there are zebra/ horse , dog/ coyote, bobcat/ housecat, lion/ tiger, etc. hybrids, I would think that a chimp/ human hybrid would easily be possible-just not ethical!

18. .wikipedia entry: Humanzee
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanzee

The Humanzee (also known as the Chuman, or Manpanzee) is a hypothetical chimpanzee/human hybrid. Chimpanzees and humans are very closely related (95% of their DNA sequence, and 99% of coding DNA sequences are in common<1>), leading to contested speculation that a hybrid is possible, though no specimen has ever been confirmed.

22. Recent debate ...
Making babies to harvest tissue

A monumental debate is going on in the British House of Commons over the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, which will influence how governments around the world regulate family and reproductive issues in the next century.

Everything's on the table in this free-for-all: late-term abortions, human-animal hybrids, and IVF for lesbians and unmarried women.

24. It has already - and he is just finishing his second term as president of the USA!
Edited on Tue Jun-10-08 11:39 AM by LeftishBrit
ETA: I see many people beat me to that one! Seriously, I don't think it's possible. Although there is lots of emphasis on this '98% of genes in common', 2% can be sufficient to prevent such a thing. We have almost as high a percentage of genes in common with mice, if it comes to that; and no one is thinking of human-mouse hybrids.
