While driving into town (we live in a rural area) with my son
today, we passed the local skating rink. Now that school is out they have added more hours. But what absolutely flabbergasted me was the sign on the marquee. "Christian Skate Night" and gave the hours. I don't remember the hours I was in such shock. I am going to call them and ask which nights Muslims and Jews can skate. Will they have a bouncer if a muslim or Jew tries to get in? I know that I live in TN and fundamentals have a strong hold on most people here, but that just takes the cake.

5. I think it's a private sector skating rink.

Still a bit jarring. Maybe a chuch group rented it out for an evening.

9. I guess it's not that different from the fish on the local car repair shop...
I guess it's just a business decision--the idea being that it's more profitable to risk pissing off a few non-Christians (or Christians who don't pray "like the hypocrites", per Jesus Himself) in order to attract more Christian paying customers.

10. Sorry, I misread

...and thought the marquee was at a school. Less haste, more speed. :)

Yeah, if it's a private business they probably see this as fair to advertise. I'm not sure what a phone call would accomplish...but I personally would be reluctant to patronize the rink in future if they can't be bothered to find a less discriminating way to word things. Like, "{insert church name} Skate Night".

edit: oops, and on this reply I thought I was replying to the OP. Time to go soak my head!

I look at it this way--if they are skating they probably are not out drinking! Ha!

6. That's what churches have become, One Stop Shopping Social Clubs, mutual flattery societies,"misfits"
need not apply. And if a Misfit does get in, s/he will be counseled to enlist in the Military, if they're young enough.

12. thanks for pointing that out...
but,we all know that any positive message christianity tries to get across to the youth is "far" outweighed by the all the above mentioned stuff.

13. Do they get in free like on "Ladies Skate Night"?
Probably not, however, if the majority in your community belong to whatever "christian" congregation that sponsors this I guess you really can't fight it. Be glad it's only one night. Get concerned if it starts becoming most nights. Actually, if all those people go skating on one night, maybe it's a good thing because you don't have to be around them on other nights providing they prefer to be among their own once a week.

14. I'd call the rink
and ask if a church rented it for those hours. Rinks are rented by a number of groups.

16. It sounds like that really frightens you for some reason.
A church group no doubt reserved the rink and paid for it.

That's exactly what it's called..

This sort of thing is not at all unusual in the South.

20. Many skate rinks have Christian Skate nights
Not sure what is different from any other night but it is a scheme to get the bible bangers into the rink and spend some money there.

23. I really do think it just means they play Christian music.
I don't think they could legally prohibit anyone who wasn't Christian from using the rink that night! I think it's just that, well, chances are if they play only Christian music that night, chances are they're going to attract more Christians than non-Christians. I'm sure that if someone went up to the door and said "I'm not Christian, can I still skate?" they'd say "Sure, pay the money and you're in."

Of course, there are probably a lot of Christians who'd stay away on those nights because they're not into the whole "Christian music" thing.
