Jury selection begins in case of teens in homeless beatings

Hooks

Daugherty

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - Jury selection begins in the case of 2 teens accused of beating homeless men in Broward County.

Attorneys will begin searching Thursday for an impartial jury to hear the highly-publicized case.

Nineteen year-old Thomas Daugherty and 20-year-old Brian Hooks are charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder in the 2006 attack beatings of 3 men in Fort Lauderdale.

One homeless man died after he was beaten with baseball bats. The other two suffered broken bones and lacerations. One attack was caught on surveillance video.

Hooks and Daugherty face life in prison if convicted.

A third suspect, 20-year-old William Ammons, took a plea deal last week and agreed to testify against them. Ammons will be sentenced on Aug. 20.

Norris Gaynor, who died as a result of the attack

6. Exactly! "Jury selection begins in case of teens in homeless BEATINGS."
Beatings? They're up on charges of MURDER 1! The "beating" was the method used.

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts if they were children of color, the word MURDER would have been very prominent in that headline. Yeah, I'm cynical, but I spent too many years in Tampa.
