Post a picture of your "dream house"
Following on from this interesting thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x3343224

which is about teeny, tiny (we're talking 100 square feet) homes.

I am curious as to what DUers would think is "ideal". Interpret that however you want.

Here's mine:

Or perhaps, in a larger city, this:

Or, if I won the lottery, this:

23. one of my brothers used to have one just like that and it was something
to see on the inside, the quality of materials and the craftsmanship that it was made with was something else. Thanks for the reminder.

Those fema trailers purchased after Katrina were nothing to compare to what camper trailers used to be built like I can say that.

I used to tell people that when I lived in a travel trailer. The airstream would be nice, or one of those bloopy trailers, ah, teardrop trailers.

3. Your #1 is very close to mine...
I was born in Long Beach, CA, and raised within a 20 mile radius... there are California Bungalows all over the place... and I love them... but a two bedroom with 800 sq ft and one bathroom with a small backyard and a postage stamp front yard would cost you over $700k in a decent neighborhood around here.

Edited on Tue May-27-08 02:34 PM by LucyParsons
I am willing to live under an overpass. Not budging.

I rent downtown at the moment - $550 for 600sq ft., pool, and free parking (yes, it is possible) - but no dishwasher, W/D, and only window AC units. Still, I love it. I am sure it will be bulldozed to make room for more Californians soon.

When/if I get priced out if rents inflate beyond my earning power, I will move to San Francisco and live in a box with three roomates.

Good plan, huh?

That was Wright's AZ home (the "twin" in Wisconsin is Taliesin North) and it (to me, anyway) is the more interesting of the two, just based on the innovations Wright incorported into it.

BTW, the guides that lead the home tours are just amazing in their knowledge of both Wright and his work.

11. My dream house
is made out of recycled materials, with the walls made of papercrete (that's concrete, sand, and shredded paper mixed with water--light, fire and bug proof, and a great way to recycle magazines and other paper waste that is difficult to recycle). We've found a carpenter who just finished building his dream home almost entirely from materials that were going to be thrown out at building sites. His bathroom is walled entirely in cedar--he got boards that had been left out in the weather and had darkened--he simply planed them and they were fine! Anyway, he's intrigued with papercrete and has agreed to help my husband with construction.

Oh, forgot to say that it would have its own power plant (combination of solar/wind).

My devious plan is to take my boyfriend there on vacation and talk him into moving there (he's never been). It's the only other city in the US I would move to (including NYC - meh). I do realize that most people in San Francisco live in boxes. ;)

I paid $650 for a 9x12 room. Neighborhood was amazing, but the apartment was awful.

I'm kicking around the idea of moving to New York in the fall. I think that it would be cool to have a new experience for a while, but the love affair I have with San Francisco is strong. I know that I wouldn't like New York as much as I do San Francisco.

24. At the risk of being flamed
I kind of hate New York.

Well, I don't hate it. It just didn't live up to my expectations. Maybe it's because I fell in love with San Francisco on my first visit at age 19, and didn't visit New York until I was 26, and had spent four years living in London.

I just got back from a whirlwind 24 hour trip to New York to see the awesome show going on at the Guggenheim, and that was enough for another couple of years. It's so... crowded, flat, dirty... American. It's no San Francisco, that's for sure.

If you move, I'll sublet your current apartment... ;)

36. My first trip to NY was when I was 20.
I was living in San Diego at the time so I was blown away by how much of a "city" it is. I loved the subway, local restaurants, diversity, the whole bit. Since I've moved to San Francisco my opinion of NY moves more into the "meh" column. It's a great city, but that porridge is a little too hot for me. San Francisco is just right. London, OTOH, is my cup of tea (no pun intended). I have a general fascination with English culture, so if I could swing a move there, it would be amazing.

As for my current apartment, I'm moving out at the end of next month. It's in a great location and I hate to move, but them's the breaks.

20. California bungalows rock!
I am a sucker for a CB or Craftsman cottage:

Also, from CA, I really dig Eichler homes:

I live in a post-war Junior 5 home in SF -- all orignal everything -- which is kind of fun and kind of bad. I am actually going to finally redo the bathroom tile/floor -- the very real need to renovate has finally surpassed my love of it.

I have been a big fan of that style all my life, but never knew what to call it except "midcentury bowling alley" . :D

The Eichler stuff is just amazing -- it completely holds up design-wise, just as clean and modern as it looked 50 years ago. The SF penninsula is just loaded with them -- I remember longing after those houses as a kid. Eichler has been "discovered" in a big way, so there is no longer a way to get your hands on one for a reasonable price.

96. Eichler vs Bungalows
Good friends of ours (self and SO), bought an Eichler a couple of years ago from an older lady who'd let it get really run down. They have restored it and it's a beauty. (It's in Orange,CA) However, it's not my style. Too "cold", all glass, hard surfaces, etc. What it's supposed to be I guess.

I'm crazy for any Bunglow, Craftsman, etc. Nice and cozy, lots of warm wood...you know. After drooling over this style of house my whole adult life, about 5 years ago I was looking at pictures of the house I lived in until I was 10. The thing was a Calif Bungalow! I'd never realized it until then. It was in So. Central Los Angeles. Have since driven by it and wished I had it now, and could restore it. It's not in the best shape.

I'm in Long Beach CA, so I do see many of those beauties down here. Talk about drooling over houses!!!!:wow:

I'm not a person who likes living outside of a city. I need to live right in the heart of things, so no to a huge suburban style mansion, so this...

Like you, I wouldn't really want to be in the burbs or a small town. Actually, the burbs are my nightmare. I live in fear of being priced out of the central Austin rental market (since I am out of the purchase market for a 20 mile radius).

Sometimes I fantasize about a Parisian apartment like this:

Those floor-to-ceiling balconette windows really do it for me. :loveya:

30. I'm very lucky to live in my 'dream home'.
We have a 2800 sqft house with 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a den, LR, FR, DR, an oversized 3 car garage, with an inground pool in the backyard, and it sits on a acre.
We built a 900 sqft barn in the backyard that MrMouse uses as a workshop and have almost 1000 sqft of covered patio with 2 built-in bbqs and a wood-fired pizza oven.
I have room to indulge my love of gardening with pecan trees and plenty of citrus trees.

I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.

59. No picture
But my dream house is right off HWY 71 east in a little "town" called Garfield. I say "town" because because it doesn't have a population sign- just the name. Two story w/ two (top and bottom) huge porches (almost wrap around). Looks like it was built in the 20s or 30s. Very beautiful. Of course I'd have to move it about 200 yards back from the highway-a bit on the noisy side.

70. Stayed here for a bit.
In a self-built eco-village (self built by an extremely dedicated gentleman)

And here, in Bordeaux, a permaculture farm.

Ah, those days...

I felt strange coming back home from them, as if I were returning not to reality, but a dream...

Right next to mass transit, close to, but not in DC. I preseently live a little too far to walk to the Metro in Rockville MD.

Something built Pre-World War II but modernized and LEED compliant.

Looking something like this:

or this:

or this:

With amenities like a swimming pool (good for laps)

2-3 bedrooms with a study and plenty of character.
