Oil drilling: For the record
I have, for a long time, felt we should boost drilling the U.S. coasts, but under the condition that the oil companies use every kind of safeguard available to them to reduce the chance of an environmental disaster. The precautions should be verifiable, well-monitored and redundant. At $130 a barrel, the costs involved would be manageable.

As for ANWR... that area is so remote and so fragile that we should hold that as a last resort. I think we could develop other sources of fuel before that is necessary.

1. Wasn't one of the arguments against drilling in ANWR its limited supply of oil?
I was thinking the reports indicated that the oil from there would be consumed in the U.S. in only a few years.

And who's to say that oil would be used in the U.S.? We're now in a global market. The oil companies are multi-national with no loyalties to the U.S. Who's to say the oil doesn't get shipped to China, India or some other competing nation?
