House overrides farm bill veto, but Democrats eat crow
Missing 34-page section leaves the measure's fate in procedural limbo

By JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS
Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The House overwhelmingly rejected President Bush's veto Wednesday of a $290 billion farm bill, but what should have been a stinging defeat for the president became an embarrassing episode for Democrats.

Only hours before the House's 316-108 vote, Bush had vetoed the five-year measure, saying it was too expensive and gave too much money to wealthy farmers when farm incomes are high. The Senate then was expected to follow suit quickly.

Action stalled, however, after the discovery that Congress had omitted a 34-page section of the bill when lawmakers sent the massive measure to the White House. That means Bush vetoed a different bill from the one Congress passed, leaving leaders scrambling to figure out whether it could become law.

Democrats hoped to pass the entire bill, again, today under expedited rules usually reserved for unopposed legislation. Lawmakers also probably will have to pass an extension of current farm law, which expires Friday.

"We will have to repass the whole thing, as will the Senate," said Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y. "We can't let the farm bill just die."

1. 34 pages does not disappear easily.
Call me paranoid but I suspect someone put a fly in the ointment.

6. I agree with you.
Other bills had stuff added to them after Congress voted but BEFORE Bush signed. If the Repugs got by with that, why not just say that this one is all good, too, and the veto override stands?

4. I agree! How hard is it to make sure you send the right version of the bill to the WH?
Good grief! When things are this important you'd think there would be things in place to make sure nothing gets screwed up! Wow!

Do you think they need a good administrative assistant on the Hill?

I do a better job on a volunteer basis than some paid staffers are capable of doing! There is SIMPLY NO EXCUSE FOR THIS MIX-UP!

15. BULL. SHIT. It wasn't omitted. I'd speculate somebody removed the 34 pages on purpose.
They did it to obviously stall for time, perhaps to insert in crap amendments meant as giveaways to corporate interests.
