1. Awesome news! He'll be my neighbor more or less!
as for what they do here, I think it's mostly training.

3. Ft Lewis is the home
of the stryker brigades, which have been in the thick of the action in Iraq. A lot of those guys are due for rotation, so don't get your hopes up too soon. Hopefully we'll be winding this mess down. In the meantime, we keep them all in our thoughts and prayers.

5. GREAT base, GREAT area to live in.
Not sure what they do there anymore...they have facilities for lotsa stuff though, infantry, armour, artillary and etc. have all found homes there over the years. Ft. Lewis used to be one of the most requested bases a service man could wind up at...I don't know if that has changed. Have your BIL bring his outdoor gear for his days off...we gots lots of outdoorsy stuff to do up here. Obviously I am a fan, I grew up on Ft. Lewis and I live not too many miles away in the city of Tacoma.

9. That should take a while
and seems unlikely to put him in harms way.

12. Back in the day, North Ft. Lewis had a MARS outfit...
This was some sort of communications outfit, not sure what the acronym M.A.R.S. stood for though.
If your BIL is at all into frisbee golf, let me know and I will be more than happy to take him out on our Steilacoom course. :http://www.co.pierce.wa.us/pc/abtus/ourorg/parks/discgolf.htm That is my preferred form of recreation. There are thousands of disc-golf courses in America and at one point ours was rated at ninth best in the nation! (There is a course on Ft. Lewis, 18 holes I think but I am not sure how maintained it is these days)

Hiking, boating, kayaking, skiing and camping are all common recreations up here. Tacoma has some fine restaurants and a bit of a nightlife, Armed Service folks are encouraged and welcomed in all. Ft. Lewis has McChord Air Force base on its north-eastern boundary and Bremerton Naval Shipyards is not so far off either. Tacoma gets visitors from all three with many retirees calling this city home.

I suspect your BIL will come to love it up here.
