The Day After

So the State of the Union is over, the room has been swept, the lipstick wiped off the ckeeks and the country returns to normal. What "new" did we hear last night? Seemed to me to be a tepid mish-mash of previous speeches, with insufficient proposals posing as health care reform and a weak line about global climate change. Whoop-T-doo. Gone are the stong proclamations about axis of evil nations and evildoers and holier-than-thou statments about banning gay marriage, restricting abortion and stem cell research.

You KNOW its bad when Bush abandons the only issues his rabid religious right base wants to hear.

But there was no escaping the disaster in Iraq. For all his mealy-mouthed, too-little-too-late "hug me" pleas for bipartisanship, the Decider has stated he's decided to go it alone in an escalation of the war nobody wants or believes will work.

No weasle words about forming a select comittee of advisors on Iraq will redeem him, either. He already had such advice from the Iraq Study Group and totally ignored all their suggestions, opting instead to try this failed surge strategy a 5th time. No, he didn't convince me that he'll listen to anybody save the tiny voices in his head (God? Rove?) that tell him more innocents must die for oil.

How's that go again . . . fool me once?

Overshadowed in yesterday's news cycle was a very important development in the growing opposition to the New Way Forward (aka same old failed strategy) plan; the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on the nomination of General David Petraeus to replace Gen. George Casey as ground commander in Iraq. After listening to his testimony and the Q and A with committee Senators, I'm left with the question: Is saying the Bush plan "could" work - but there are no guarantees - sufficient justification for sacrificing more American and Iraqi lives and body parts to this civil war?

Is this the strongest statement the soon-to-be-confirmed Commander can make on the "New Plan" for Iraq? Be afraid . . . .

There were some very interesting moments in yesterday's hearing and we'll share a sampling of them with you tonight, plus a fresh look at the I. Scooter Libby trial which promises to deliver a Merry Fitzmass to us all!

Did Sadr's mom rat him out to the CIA?

After reading the U.N.'s statement that at least 34,452 civilians died violent deaths last year in Iraq, I touched base with two expert sources and asked if they thought President Bush's decision to send an additional 21,500 troops to Iraq could restore order to the country.

Take One: Fix Baghdad and kill Sadr

My first source is a former CIA officer who was stationed in Iraq during the post-invasion period and who is extremely pessimistic about the situation there. He believes the situation could be greatly improved if Lt. Gen. David Petraeus—whom President Bush recently picked to take command of all Coalition forces in Iraq—moves with “speed, alacrity, and ruthlessness.”

The second person with whom I spoke was Bob Baer, a former CIA officer who was stationed mostly in the Middle East from 1976 to 1997. He was decidedly more negative about the prospects in Iraq than my first source.

Baer also thinks that the deployment of the additional troops is a good idea—but only if they are used to facilitate the orderly partition of Iraq, which, he said, is now inevitable. According to Baer, “The number of Iraqis who still believe Humpty Dumpty can be put back together couldn't fill a conference room at the American Enterprise Institute.”

General Says New Strategy in Iraq Can Work Over Time

WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 — Lt. Gen. David H. Petraeus, President Bush’s new choice as the top commander in Iraq, told senators on Tuesday that the new military strategy to secure Baghdad can work, and that he had asked that the additional troops the administration promised be deployed as quickly as possible.

In his first public comments about Mr. Bush’s plan to send some 21,500 troops, the general described the situation in Iraq as “dire” but not hopeless. He asserted that the “persistent presence” of American and Iraqi forces in strife-ridden Baghdad neighborhoods was a necessary step, but also cautioned that the mission would not succeed if the Iraqi government did not carry out its program of political reconciliation.

“The way ahead will be neither quick nor easy, and undoubtedly there will be tough days,” he told the Senate Armed Services Committee. “We face a determined, adaptable, barbaric enemy. He will try to wait us out. In fact any such endeavor is a test of wills, and there are no guarantees.”

But much of the hearing focused not on details of the strategy about to unfold in Iraq, but rather on the political debate within the Senate over resolutions that would signal disapproval of the new strategy.

The toxicity of Joe Lieberman's treason accusations

Joe Lieberman has probably become the single most poisonous Beltway voice when it comes to the war in Iraq. The Bush administration's principal rhetorical tactic for the last five years, of course, has been to equate opposition to its policies and criticism of the Leader with love of the Terrorists. But when it comes to the debate over Iraq, Lieberman -- time and again -- has managed to descend even further into the rhetorical sewer than the administration itself.

Lieberman, of course, spent several years warning Americans not to criticize their Leader with regard to the War. Just two weeks ago, Lieberman went on Meet the Press and prompted an angry outburst from Chuck Hagel after Lieberman sat there smugly accusing Hagel and anyone else who opposes the Glorious Surge of wanting the U.S. to lose in Iraq. In the same appearance, Lieberman also looked straight into the camera and said that the U.S. was "attacked on 9/11 by the same enemy that we’re fighting in Iraq today" -- a claim so transparently false that even the President long ago abandoned it.

UPDATE III: Whether Lieberman accused "surge" opponents of giving "comfort" to the enemy or merely "encouraging" them (and it looks increasingly like it was "encouragmenet," though still nothing truly definitive), Chuck Hagel's impassioned response applies just as potently -- not only to Lieberman, but to all of those war supporters who think that what is one of our country's greatest strengths -- the fact that we debate important issues, rather than meekly submit to the Leader's will -- is something we should suppress because the Terrorists are emboldened by our disagreements.

162. just finished watching those hearings on C span, they were great

these senators do not want this escalation/surge/increase of troops, this ought to be very interesting, the concern and determination of these senators was amazing they should have talking like 2 years ago. Now comes the hard part to sell their idea, to stop this madness, but the hard sell will be to George, and I think if he does not listen there will be a Constitutional Crisis, or if George attacks Iran. But it was great to finally hear some reason and time to end this conflict. Senator Kerry was great, but so was Obama, Boxer, Feingold, Cardin, Bob Casey, Bob Nelson, and even those Repubs, but Hagel, he was in with Biden and Dodd.
