The toll from the cyclone that battered Myanmar last weekend rose above 22,000 dead and 41,000 missing Tuesday as the international community prepared to rush in aid, state radio reported.

A news broadcast on government-run radio said that 22,464 people have now been confirmed dead from Cyclone Nargis, which tore through the country's rice bowl and biggest city of Yangon early Saturday.

The broadcast added that 41,000 were still missing, raising fears the death toll would soar.

Relief efforts for the stricken area, mostly in the low-lying Irrawaddy River delta, have been difficult, in large part because of the destruction of roads and communications outlets by the storm.

2. Laura Bush's critizing the Myanmar government for not warning the people
was downright hilarious.

3. She has a point about not warning the people.
Where she gets hypocritical is criticizing the response. The NHC is the best in the world on warning and tracking tropical cyclones. They did a very good job forecasting Katrina. Too bad every other part of the US Government completely screwed everything up.

On the otherhand, the IMD (Indian Meteorological Dept.), which warned this storm are the most incompetent meteorologists on the planet. A storm can be developing an eye wall and they will still call it a depression.

As for the weather channel, why would they care about a storm in the Bay of Bengal?
